Maybe in a city like NY where rent-stabilization is a hope for larger segments of the population (though it does not appear to be anything close to the majority). But generally speaking renters have less wealth and disposable income than owners across the board.
I think you didn’t get my meaning. That’s exactly why New York isn’t as rich as people think it is. A city of renters, means that the crazy housing inflation matters but it’s not as reflective of the apartment population. It’s extremely common in many of the biggest American cities for a poor neighborhood to have decently expensive homes around 300,000+ dollars but once you click how much of the poverty is concentrate run the apartments it makes sense why this poor area still has expensive homes.

Yes exactly this. Massachusetts has more public housing units per capita than any state. Boston has fewer as a percentage than it used to but still very high. NYCs share is huge.
