My home in Chicago is assessed at $1.8 million (I purchased it for much, much less), and I paid a lot in property taxes last year. That's how much I paid. A lot.

Oh. I live in Los Angeles, I guess it just goes to show that I still consider this place to be an extended hotel stay My home here is actually assessed at $350,000, which is only $50,000 more than what I bought it for a few years ago. My assessed property taxes were almost nothing; I don't even remember the number.

Those who can't afford it anymore, but those of us who make enough don't have much of a problem with the property taxes. You get what you pay for, and we pay for living right outside one of the best cities in the world and the top school districts in the country.

Wrong.

You can lose the "can't afford it anymore" line, it's getting old and hardly describes why people are leaving. I know quite a few, and they were all transfered by their employers.

Some would also disagree with you as far as you get what you pay for. Most of the U.S. considers those taxes and housing prices to be insane for what you actually get, myself included.

Quite a few of your fellow Long Islanders certainly agree, according to the LI forum.

Why do you even spend time on the LI forum if you've never lived there or never visited? I find it hard to believe. And yes, exactly, people move down there because they can't afford it here anymore, or they got transferred. I haven't encountered anyone who said they can afford Long Island fine, but want to move to Georgia. Those types usually go somewhere on the west coast or to Florida, where there's a similarity in cost of living.

I spend time on many different forums, and I could really care less what you believe. And you know nothing of where I have or haven't visited.

I guess it's just another example of you not being able to wrap your head around people that don't think the same way you do.

I know what I read on the LI forum. It's there for all to see.

I live in Middlesex County, NJ. My parents pay 11k a year in property taxes. And my school district isn't really anything special. The elementary school I went to was good (it's the best in the district) but the middle school and high school are just average. In a ranking of NJ High Schools, my school barely made the top 50%. Their property taxes were 3k when they bought the house in '94. I don't know exactly what the assessed value is but I know they bought the house for somewhere between 200-250k and it would probably go for 500k now. When the real estate market was better a few years back, 550k-600k.

We paid $9,000 in 2004 in Smithtown and had a little over half an acre. For the other poster, I pay $4,500 in Florida and can measure my property in feet. I can literally reach out and touch my neighbor. I am 5'2' and cannot lay down between my neighbor's and my property. Yep, so much cheaper here.

You get what you pay for.

My parents house is assessed at $165,000 and they don't have to pay about 860-880 in property taxes(?) due to a STAR and Veteran exemption. I believe that the taxes would be about $4200 altogether in taxes without the exemptions. This is in one of the "best" school districts in the area and the land area is 269x118 too. Living space is 2154 sq. ft. and they live in the town of Onondaga.

Correction, the assesment is at 83,500 and total taxes are at $2500. Looked at old and partial information before.

Land area is 60x110 and the school district is "good". Living space is 1198 sq. ft. and is in Salina.
