I just read a story about the most walkable cities in America and Walkscore.com ranks the most walkable cities in America and breaks it down by neighborhood as well. They have color coded maps that show the most walkable areas in a city. I was really surprised Los Angeles was in the Top 10 and ranked ahead of Portland, Or. And there are some important cities missing from the list like Miami and New Orleans, I would think NOLA would rank high if it was listed. I think this would be a good resource for anyone looking to move to a walkable area of a city.
The scores can be a little misleading. I just plugged in downtown Atlanta and it got a score of 98. It may score as walkable, but you definitely wouldn't want to walk around the downtown area for pleasure, especially after dark.
Meanwhile, my home in the nearby City of Decatur -- a neighborhood considered by metro Atlanta residents as extremely walkable -- scored a mere 48.
