To be clear though, this is part of a greater trend of blacks leaving the west coast. Portland, Oakland, the LA area - essentially everywhere. Gentrification is playing a role in most places, along with displacement by Latinos in Southern California. However, the pull of the "reverse great migration" back to the South is scooping up a lot of younger black people. IIRC, New York and Pennsylvania are the only two northern states which are maintaining their black populations in absolute numbers.
NYC is losing blacks as well. The city was about 33% Non-Hispanic black in 2000, now according to the last census we're at 27% NHB. Most of these are not even African American but carribean blacks.
In Los Angeles, Hollywood, Koreatown, Highland Park, Eagle Rock, Silver Lake, Echo Park, South Park, Historic Core and Venice are the big gentrification success stories.
Mid-City, East Hollywood, West Adams, Arts District, and various East Side hoods, are some of the neighborhoods experiencing gentrification now.
NYC is probably the king of gentrification, while DC and Philly also have experienced quite a bit. Boston a little with Jamaica Plain but its core was never abandoned to the extent the other cities were.
