Are you the big city type or just some country bumpkin ? Do you enjoy having peace and quiet and being "away from it all" or do you thrive in a hustling, bustling city? Maybe you're the type that prefers the midde of the road approach. A city that has amenities but is small enough that you feel comfortable in. What are you?

EDIT: I'm talking about the city itself, not a metro.

I prefer a small city. But if I had to choose, Id much rather live in the city or way out in the country than the suburbs. The suburbs would be like death to me.

I like tiny cities the most, especially at rush hour . Still I love rural areas and wonder what it would be live there. I like the idea but I'd worry over the distance if an accident would happen, especially with the kids. The isolation seems like a dual edged sword - you're really safe most times..or because of the solitude can be a victim of those extremely nutso criminals.

I'm a total country bumpkin. My house is in a rural area but within 10 miles of a hospital, but my cabin is on an island on an isolated lake a good 20 miles from town. You don't take chances, you get some first aid training, and be prepared for the worst at all times. Even one mile is a long way to crawl with a broken leg or an axe to the leg. But I would not trade it for anywhere else on the planet.

Re: "Even one mile is a long way to crawl with ...an axe to the leg."

Sweet goodness, Rance! What's going on up there in AK? Get thee to a huge, mega-metropolis immediately, if not sooner!

Seriously, I lived in a tiny town until 13 & then the rest of my life have lived in mega-metros. I've always wanted to make my way back to a tiny town or live rurally, but stayed in cities as I've always been single & thought my prospects would be better. It's also where the jobs are.

If I ever got married, I'd drag him by the arm from the church saying, "We don't have time for a reception, we're going to the country!" He haw!

Good thread... VV

I live in a town the size of about 20,000 to me that is big enough, I like my peace and quiet, with out dealing with rush hour and getting lost.

I can't breath in a big city. I drove to southern MN last April, going through places like Edmonton and Minneapolis/St. Paul. I mean I actually darn near start hyperventilating when I get into crowds or traffic congestion. I would have to ease into a large city. Just plunging in takes my breath away. And if there were no mountains to use as landmarks or direction...I'd be lost in 5 minutes. I need room to breathe!

My choice wasn't listed. I prefer rural areas with less than 50,000 population. I'm assuming those numbers were for population...

Perhaps they meant income, in which case, I choose the last option:
Rural area with income >50,000 (dollars, of course).

I live in Lincoln, Nebraska with about 280,000 people and in the area it is just way too small for me, Fargo, North Dakota was way too small for my tastes also.

I wouldnt want to live in NYC, LA, Chicago or San Francisco they are way too large for me also. I like medium-sized metropolitan areas such as Columbus, Denver, St. Louis, Pittsburgh. Anything between 1.5 million and 4 million people in the metropolitan area is about what I like.

1.5 to 4 million person metropolitan tend to be vibrant enough to always have something to do but also lack of the congestion and apartments rents that is typical of very large metropolitan areas.

If finances and lifestyle allowed, I'd live in NY. Never realized how much I love the city until I left. I'm now in a town of about 17K and it's a little stifling (oddly enough - this word is usually reserved for city living) - although I think it's the best for my kids right now.
