Well, I come from New York City (born in Brooklyn ; lived in Staten Island and Queens) and I lived there for nearly my whole life. I moved to Charlotte, NC with my parents and sister in late October of 2008.
I honestly love the South so much more then New York. I love the culture, the people, the weather, the attitude, and the politics in the South.
Although, I do miss a lot of aspects of NY culture, I moved on and love it in the south.
Oddly enough I prefer living in Ohio to Sacramento, where I relocated from. Dayton does indeed suck in many ways, but I like the "older" patina and character of Ohio, and the seasonal weather. Cincinnat (and, to a lesser extent, Columbus) are to Dayton what the Bay Area is to Sacramento...but they are considerably closer and cheaper to visit in terms of going out, things to do, etc.
I moved from Cleveland to the Detroit/Ann Arbor area years ago. Not a big economic, cultural, or climate change but I much prefer Michigan, even with its current economic condition, to Ohio. There is more to do, faster pace, prettier landscape, and the people are more genuine (for good or bad).
I moved from Michigan to Minnesota and it's really, really close, because I love both places. I would have to go with Minnesota, because I love the wide-open spaces of the Great Plains, the sunny weather (well, sunnier than Michigan) and the better economy. I still love Michigan - it's one of the most beautiful places on earth.
I grew up in upstate New York but have lived my adult life in Minneapolis. I like Minneapolis a lot better; there is more to do, the culture is more dynamic and cosmopolitan and the people are more openminded.
I grew up in TN, moved to MA, and am now in CA. The weather in the Northeast was a killer for me. California is great- great weather, lots of jobs, but the cost of living is awful. I want to move to TX at some point. Hopefully that will hit all of my requirements: Not cold, good jobs, affordable.
