Looking at realtor.com, you can get anything from a 6-unit rental property to a modest-sized house on a 4.6 acre lot about 15 minutes from the city to decent-sized (1500-2000 ft²) homes in nice neighborhoods to an almost waterfront (Lake Superior) 1200 ft² condo for around $200k.

You can find a house in any school district in the area that is priced between $150-200k. Typically they will be 3BR, 2BA. One thing that I like about this area is the cheap price of housing.

$200,000 doesn't seem to go very far in the Boston area. Just doing a quick search in the Boston Globe real estate listings, most of the homes in the $200,000 price range were in the rougher sections of town, like Roxbury, Mattapan, and Dorchester. Outside of the city, many were multi-family houses that needed work.

A condo in Hyde Park was in this building and not in the best area for $199,800, but the inside seemed nice, although small:

This rowhome in East Boston was going for $189,900:

This three-family home in Brockton was listed for $200,000, with tenants who would like to remain in the building:

This one in Bellingham, about 45 minutes outside of Boston, didn't look too bad, as the town is relatively safe:

At the other end of the spectrum, this Beacon Hill home was listed at $4,895,000:

Additionally, this home in Dover, one of the most expensive and wealthy towns in Massachusetts, was selling for $8,995,000:
