Yeah, scientifically you're right. But in everyday usage you'd be wrong. As in very, very, very wrong. If you walked up to a group black guys and referred to them as Negros, you're liable to get your butt whipped. And, next time you meet an Asian American, why don't you refer to him as a Mongoloid? I'm pretty sure the circle of love would not be extended.

Why is that? Does the sound of the word Negro just sound bad. I think that threw the years, changing the way we are suppose to refer to black people really confuses people. I work with a girl who hate to be called black or AA. She preferred Colored.
It is just Black people that are so sensitive to what they want to be called. If I ever witness a crime and a black police officer asked me to describe the person responsible I would feel really uncomfortable if the person committing the crime was black too. What if the police officer think I am a racist if I tell him "oh, the guy was black "...
I know it sound really stupid but that’s how I feel. I have a feeling other feel the same way to some extent.
One other time when I had a customer at work I asked her if anybody already helped her and she said
" oh , I hate to say this....It was a dark girl..Well, black” . This old lady felt like she was wrong for even saying the word.

You'd have to ask Scraper, our resident anthropologist.

All words have import. Negro was pretty much the code word of the Civil Rights Era for something much less savory. Black and African American really came to forefront after that. Now, I have black friends who laugh at the term "African American," as really stupid. And no way, no how, would they ever identify themselves as "Colored." That's the term that was put above restrooms and water fountains when segregation was legal.
