^ wow, I can't believe how many people from SJ County commute into the Bay Area. I think a lot of people consider Tracy part of the Bay Area b/c I definitely have heard people from there refer to it as "The Bay Area". The Bay Area has definitely pushed beyond it's natural geographic boundaries.
The commute between the Bay and San Joaquin is just gawd awful. They really need to do something cause last time I went out there during commute times it took me 3 hrs to drive from Oakland to Stockton..just insane.

Last time I drove up to the Bay Area earlier this year I left San Diego around 1130pm Thu night b/c it's much easier and faster to drive late at night to avoid LA traffic and there are way less cars on I-5. Anyways about 6 hours later I came up on the 205/580 merge and traffic was horrendous all the way over the Altamont Pass to 680. I freakin flipped out when I saw that mess b/c after 6 hours on the road the last thing I want to deal with is morning rush hour traffic, I'll definitely plan better next time. That freeway is one of the most congested I've experianced, I hope those metering lights they installed help somewhat.

GDP is prob a meaningless stat in era of increasingly virtual/globalized industries like tech/finance, where senior execs may live and work in SiliconValley or Manhattan/Greenwich, but cos. derive 50%+ of revenues from outside US and many of cos.' operations are scattered across US and RoW....
Would look at IRS tax return data for urban regions to reveal median taxable income and no. of households w/>$1MM/yr income; >$10MM/yr income....and even >$100MM/yr income...to better judge relative economic power of urban regions
Suspect NYC and SiliconValley regions would dwarf any urban regions in world if examined in terms of IRS-taxable incomes by households; NYC would likely be first in absolute nos., but SiliconValley would prob rank first on any per capita basis.....Chic and LA would prob follow as distant 3rd and 4th place regions....
Check out how big LA is. We use only two counties in one state to compete with the four-state metro of NYC.
So, FC, what was all that talk about LA being so sprawly if people from four different states, one of them on the other side of another, go to NYC. That's way more sprawly and besides, data shows that the LA metro is much denser than that of the NYC metro, and they don't include PA in NYC either.
