Atlanta and Dallas are probably the most affordable cities with decent mass transit.

My question for the OP is where are you likely to work/ do you work outsie the home?

Because most older cities and towns have at least one neighborhood where you can meet most of the daily needs by foot or bike. Taxis can be hired for Dr appointments and major shopping expeditions. The problem would be if you are in a line of work where most of the jobs are located in suburban office parks.

I heard Chicago is pretty affordable compared to places like NYC and SF.

It is. Quite a bit so, actually.

Yes they do! Atlanta's Marta system is one of the first subway systems I ever rode, and I must tell you,I was and still impressed! I do not drive in Atl,I always park my car and jump on Marta. It even stops above the Greyhound station! You walk down the stairs, and Bam! there it is! You don't need a car, there's so many great places at your fingertips at each stop

Chicago even though I don't want it to get more popular. Wanting to get something soon at an affordable price.

Got around the city with a bike and Cta card without any problems. Preferred my bike over my car and could get most places in comparable time. Only used my car when I did sales work or market research. Affordable Easy to get around after a bit. The entire city is on a grid and there's a great bus and good rail system. Walkable in most neighborhoods.

From what I've done research on, because I'm trying to find these cities as well, Denver, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland seem to be good calls.

Buffalo may be another, as it has buses and rail.

I agree with the others, Cleveland--it has the heavy rail, light rail, the bus rapid transit, and is becoming more bike friendly!
