We have not heard from the people who roll down a hill. I could do this part of the way, but then I'd have to figure out how to roll up the hill to finish the commute.
I live in NY and take the A train to my office job. I live right near the A which is like half a block from my office.
For my weekend job I take a commuter train that happens to have a stop near my apartment that is on the same line as the town where my job is. Great location!
In NY, some of the trains go above-ground. Most are underground though. But if you're riding where the train is elevated, you might say you're going to take the "el." I don't hear this too much though. You won't here many transplants calling it that. I've only heard it from some natives. Maybe because back in the 40s and 50s, many of the trains were above ground. It's mostly old natives who I hear that from. But still, most call it the subway or train. I hardly ever say "el," mostly train.
Yep. I don't think I've ever actually heard someone say "el", but I know the phrase from old books where they'll refer to the "Third Avenue El" and the like. I think if you threw that phrase around today, it would be confused with the L train...which, of course, is a subway.
I actually thought the Chicago 'L' was the 'El' until I lived there for awhile last year.
Anyway, I live in New York and take an express bus. I walk a block and a half to the bus, and then about three blocks to my office.
A little off topic but I'm curious if anyone here has had experience taking rapid transit bus? They are proposing a system in Westchester County, NY to go east to west over with the new Tappan Zee Bridge. There is one line in NYC that is near my place, but I've found it isn't that fast. They claim that the busses help to control traffic lights and people have to pay before boarding.

I'm going to have to carpool to work soon once I buy a house. I'm timid about this though. I teach in the south Bronx, and my co-worker/friend's car just got broken into this morning and got at least $1000 of stuff stolen out of the car. Not the first time teachers have experienced crime in this area. Just gotta be careful about it I guess.
