I think the grocery store is the next industry to consolidate like the department store sector with Macy's, Dillard's, and Belk (Bon-Ton--future unknown) and the pharmacy chains into Walgreens and CVS/pharmacy (Rite Aid--future unknown).

Name your predominant chains that have stores all over the area (and if it's a regional nameplate name the parent owner, e.g. "Tom Thumb (Safeway)")

Greater Houston:
  • Kroger
  • Randall's (Safeway)
  • H-E-B
  • Fiesta

All of Kentucky:
- Kroger (started in nearby Cincinnati)
- Sav a Lot

In the past 10 years...
- Meijer's (Midwest based, basically a fancy version of a WM Super Center)
- Wal Mart Super Centers, past couple of years a lot of WM Neighborhood Centers opening in Lou & Lex

In some areas there are IGA's and Slone's

H-E-B, a Texas-wide chain, HQ in San Antonio. Also one Sav-a-Lot and a Super Walmert. There was an Albertsons, but it closed a couple of years ago.

In Pennsylvania we have Weis (headquartered in Sunbury, PA), Genaurdis (a Philly-area chain that used to be family-owned but was bought out by Safeway), and Wegmans (Actually a Rochester, New York chain that expanded into PA).

For Future Posters:

Could you please exclude Wal-Mart Supercenter and Super Targets since they don't fit with the traditional meaning because they are discount stores with food and they are already nationwide?
