I didn't say I think those other cities are better than Houston. I said they are more recognized as classic American cities. My initial posts began because a Houstoner was saying Dallas needs to get used to being Texas' "other" city. I don't think many people outside of Houston would necessarily agree with that. I definitely don't think that people see Houston as the fourth city or even a definite player in the second tier cities -- a maybe player perhaps.
omg! your still at it!
how about you just make one long post about everything negative about Houston and then be done with it. you will save yourself a lot of time from having to make post after post after post about why Houston is a 3rd tier city.
by the way, Dallas does not need your help defending it. from what i know from the people in Dallas, they have no problem defending themselves.
lol @ new yorkers baffled someone doesnt like their city...
just because you tell yourself your "on another level" doesnt mean its true...you are not the end all be all...that would be L.A
For the record, I'm not from New York, though I did grow up less than 2 hours from New York. However, I identified much more with Philadelphia growing up (a city I now know as an adult definitely has an inferiority complex to New York).
I've only been there once, but Los Angeles seemed alright to me. However, New York is 50% larger in metro area population and more than twice as large as LA in city population. It also is the center of business in the U.S. (actually North America) and the media center of the U.S. (not to be confused with being the movie-making capital of the U.S.). Arguably the biggest difference between New York and Los Angeles is NYC seems like a true city, both good and bad, while Los Angeles has much more of a suburban feel (something that is true of all cities that had much of their growth after cars became popular).
Los Angeles is genuinely a world city, but New York is still on a higher profile level above LA as a world city in most people's opinions.
Ok so I screwed up on the first poll, which is ok, you learn as you go and here is version 2.0 which I narrowed down to the top 10 including Atlanta by special request. You can also vote for multiple cities if you have a hard time choosing just one.
Once again which city do you generally see on C-D or even in person that the residents seem to be all uptight and defensive when you talk about some of the negative of their city. (For example: "There sure is a lot of crime here", Response: "No there isn't, if you don't like it, get outta here!", etc.)
Maybe not C-D relative, but I always ran into this with people from Philadelphia.
Furthermore, is there some law that says, if you are from Philly, you have to preface every third sentence with "I'm from Philly, and..."? A number of people I went to school with and worked with over the years felt compelled to say this whenever any old topic of discussion popped up. A great friend of mine used to do this all the time... before he moved back to Philly!
It was always the same thing. They were from Philly, and this is how they do things in Philly. They were from Philly, and this is what they ate for lunch in Philly. They were from Philly, and there was no traffic like Philly's. They were from Philly and this is what they say in Philly. They had been transferred to [wherever it was I was living] and they couldn't wait to get back to Philly. Philly, Philly, Philly. As if saying Philly added some sort of legitimacy to whatever it was they were trying to say.
To this day, I cringe when anyone says "I'm from Philly", expecting it to be a lesson in why being from Philly is relevant to all things. It rubs me the wrong way. I want to say "Yeah, well I'm from Chicago, and I don't give a flying [censored]!"
