They weren't trying to break up the USA. They wanted their own nation!
Independence.
At some point we can start a thread about how a whole area of the U.S. should consider itself lucky that Lincoln didn't order the execution of the entire population of that region for being traitors and trying to destroy an already established country (which he could have - but did not. He let the past be the past... an EXCELLENT lesson for others to learn today).
BUT... the topic is NOT about how the South broke up the United States or how it will rise again, or how much better corn bread is there. It's about the Lincoln Statues in the South that exist.
Please post your Lincoln statues, or if there are no more out there, we can end this one.

"If you bring these leaders to trial, it will condemn the North, for by the Constitution secession is not rebellion. We cannot convict him of treason." -Salmon P. Chase

*whew* While I respect your Moderator status, AtlantaGreg, this is a bit much.
Why should Southerners consider themselves (ourselves?) "lucky" that Lincoln didn't order mass executions? Does that imply a justification on some level?
Traitors?
Even Chief Justice Salmon P. Chase -- referring to the trial of Jefferson Davis -- told Edwin Stanton that "If you bring these leaders to trial, it will condemn the North, for by the Constitution, secession is not rebellion...His (Jeff Davis') capture was a mistake. His trial will be a greater one. We cannot convict him of treason."
And a congressional committee, headed by a certain Judge Franz Lieber. wrote: "After studying more than 270,000 Confederate documents, seeking evidence against Davis, the court discouraged the War Department: 'Davis will be found not guilty and we shall stand there completely beaten'."
He held the country together at his darkest hour yet they dont acknowledge him why?
So how many days have you been in the USA?
He's honored everywhere, but you really expect the traditional south to bow to his knees? Read history books....
