Just a question before I put my answer. Why did you pick Clayton Lake, ME? There is nothing there except a logging company maintenance building and bunkhouse really. No public facilities at all.
I would pick the Muskallonge Lake area in the UP of Michigan.

Oh, I did not know that about Clayton Lake since I haven't ever been there. I absolutely love Moosehead Lake in western ME. It is just fantastic in terms of scenery.
Granite, I never heard of half these places and so I have been looking them up. I started with Wisconsin (I figured they would be touristie) and I must say Eagle River looks interesting. The standard response however for Wisconsin would probably be the Door Peninsula, which is actually related to the Niagara Escarpment of Ontario and New York!
I highly recommend everyone check out Lake George - "the Queen of American Lakes" (despite the fact it is named after a king), Lake Champlain, Lake Placid, Moosehead Lake and for Michigan - Mackinac Island. Also what about Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire?
Mackinac Island is great April & May, Sept - Nov. Winter is tough getting there consistently, and June - Aug is a living nightmare with the tourism. I DO love when the lilacs are in bloom on the Island though. Makes you forget the teeming masses of Fudgies. It is a Great place to visit.
The Door County Peninsula is absolutely beautiful in summer. Door County is to the Midwest what Martha's Vineyard is to New England.
I second Door County - my favorite vacation spot in Wisconsin.
