It can be either or neither. I left Arkansas at five, but it's my home. Even if I never return it'll always be special to me in a way the place I was raised never will.
However I don't negate the possibility that someday I'll find a place where I feel I "belong" even more.
So based on the information below, what should my hometown be?
High Point, NC: Birth to 1 year old
Greensboro, NC: 9 years (non-consecutive, grade school)
Sydney, Australia: 3 years (grade school)
Raleigh, NC: 15 years (non-consecutive, went to college & high school here)
Boone, NC: 1.5 years (college)
Flagstaff, AZ: 2 years
Fort Collins, CO: 1 year
Durham, NC: 2 years (non-consecutive, current home)
FWIW, I feel like I have a few hometowns. Both Greensboro & Raleigh feel like hometowns to me, however I feel most comfortable and thus "at home" in Durham.

It seems to me that you could lay claim to the whole state of North Carolina as your hometown!

Where I grew up (Atlanta). My father was finishing up a stint in the Navy in Pensacola when I was born, and we moved 5 weeks later. So I have no connection to my birthplace.
