It really depends on what you're looking for. If you're really outdoorsy and physically active, then Denver is going to offer more in that regard. However, if you're like me and really just a city person at heart, then Chicago wins hands down. I lived in Denver for almost 5 years and didn't care much for it. It wasn't enough of a "city" for me. Despite having a much smaller metro, Milwaukee feels much more urban than Denver to me.
The problem is that Denver's winters start really early and end really late.
With that being said, Denver's winter climate is milder during the day, just as cold as night. More snow than Chicago, but it melts faster. But if you want a big urban feel, Denver doesnt quite cut it.
What most everyone else said. If you are an outdoorsy sort then move to Denver (Denver also has better weather). However, Chicago has cultural offerings that Denver does not, and is quite a bit larger. I've never lived in Denver, but I have a friend who moved there from Chicago whom I keep in touch with. She loves the nature/outdoor offerings of Denver versus Chicago, but misses Chicago sorely when it comes cultural and culinary pursuits.

Yes, it's huge differences between temperature of day and night.
But Denver receives more sunshine than Chicago.
Tough but if you want a large city feel go to Chicago but if you like the less urban suburban fell go to Denver.
