Hello everyone,

I'm a 19 year old living in the Bay Area, California. I'm working a full time job, and going to school full time to get an associates degree in Criminal Justice. I'm not doing it specifically because I want to work in Law Enforcement, I am doing it because it's what I like to do. Anyways, I am currently being supported fully by my parents, who help me out whenever they can which allows me to save quite a bit of my money I earn.

I've been plagued with a tough decision in my life. My sister and brother in law currently live in the Boise area with their two kids, and my sister has been trying her hardest to get me to move up there. She and my brother in law work for a business that needs help, so they would be able to hire me if I can't find anything else. I honestly love the area. I'm not one of those reckless California people... I love the outdoors, and being friendly to others and all of that. I see a lot of that in the Boise area. You can pretty much do anything within 20 or 30 minutes of your house. She said that if I do decide to move up there, they could let me stay at their house for a few months to help me get everything set up.

So, with that, I'm looking for advice from more mature people who have been through this before. There is a few things going on at my house that I want to get away with, but nothing that is making me want to leave immediately. If I were to leave, I'd probably miss my family the most, and I don't know how tough that would be. The major reason I want to move up there though is to be able to explore something new in life, and at least try the whole living on my own thing. I have the opportunity right now to leave and go somewhere where I can be supported at least for a little while. Should I stay where I am now and maybe move later, or try and move now and see how it works out?

Thanks everyone!

I think this is a question only you can answer. My wife and I have 4 children (20-25), so I'm aware of what's going on in your life right now. We have one son in the Army, one in the Marines, one at college, and a daughter living with us for a short time who is in transition right now. They all have different circumstances. Just talk things over with your family and come up with the plan that's best for you. BUT, do take your parent's life experience and advice to heart. It's soooo much easier to avoid pitfalls that they warn you about rather than having to learn the hard way. There will be enough times in life you will have to learn the hard way, don't add to the list, lol. Sorry; just the "dad" coming out in me. Good luck!

Well, it sounds like you at least have a backup option for employment. Crunch the numbers and see what your life might look like on that salary. Does it put you in a decent apartment in downtown Boise / near BSU (fun areas on the whole - though I suppose you aren't old enough for the bars yet), or when you move out of your sister's would you be looking at commuting in from Nampa or another outlying "suburb" just on where you could afford to live?

Do you own a car?

Boise and the Bay are hardly a day-trip apart, but they're not so far that packing up your car and driving to relocate is untenable. You don't have a spouse or kids.

You can make the move on the cheap. If you go for 6 months and hate it, you can move back on the cheap. A summer/fall in Boise sounds like fun to me.

As moves go, this one seems relatively low-risk, esp. if you do own your own car. If not, well, a bus pass back to the Bay won't be crazy expensive.

Thank you for this. I am planning to talk to my parents soon about this, I think they might have some good and bad things to say, but normally my parents aren't too involved with my life, especially my dad. He normally does his own thing, I don't think I've had any "father-son" time with him in over a year.

Thanks for the reply! I do own my own car. And I want to keep the rent under 450 (I would split 50/50 with a roommate so 900 total). I have a friend getting out of bootcamp near October, so that is a move in option for me. My sister was recommending the Nampa area for me, she lives in Meridian, but had lived in Nampa previously.
