Making a location move, I would suggest find a job first and then a suitable place to live within commuting distance and not vice versa. You don't want to be far away from friends and family and be jobless. Renting for a year or two until you feel the job has staying power might be best.
If you are talking city, suburb or rural because you want to know which is safer in economic hard times, I can't help you there. Cities are stressful to me in good times.
