Well I'm from about 20 minutes outside of Downtown Minneapolis, but if I am anywhere else outside of the Midwest I usually just say "I'm from Minneapolis". Sometimes I say I'm from "The Twin Cities"
I've noticed people from Chicagoland always say they are from Chicago. I knew a dude that always said "Im from Chicago", and I always thought he was from there...Until one day I found out he was from about an hour outside of Chicago...Sorry, that's not Chicago
I'm not a big fan of people saying they live in a city proper, when they actually live a few suburbs over. It just makes it rather confusing, thats all.

Depends on who is asking:
If it's someone from another country or I'm in another state, I'll say "Minnesota" so as not to assume they know what or where Minneapolis is. If it's someone from the Midwest or in-state I'll just say "Minneapolis". And to LittleMathYou's point, if I am talking to someone who already lives in the area I'll specify exactly what part of town I live in. I almost NEVER say "Twin Cities" though, because I am unsure how familiar that term is to outsiders and frankly, it doesn't sound very interesting.
I just say i'm from illinois(the ill state JK JK) since i lived in the city and right outside it(well, more like 20 mins SW).Aint nothin wrong with saying what state you from!
Then again now I'm starting to just say durham nc since thats where i live now.
Anyway I met a girl who said she was from chicago, i then asked her "what side?" She ended up being from naperville. smh. But im sure most big cities have this
