I am a single 40-year-old female looking for a place to move. Currently I live in New York City. Grew up in the East Village. New York is too stressful, crowded and gentrified. I have got to get out. I know when I leave I will never be able to afford to return to Manhattan to live, so I need to make my decision carefully.
I grew up in a Bohemian, eclectic, diverse neighborhood and loved it. I am looking to move to a place where the people are open-minded. Not too conservative, not too liberal, and definately not yuppies. I am looking for a place that has a lot of recreational opportunities like kayaking, biking, hiking, etc. Would prefer a mountainous region. Don't like long, hot, humid summers so don't want to live in the South East.
My fear is being too isolated may depress me since I grew up in Manhattan. Also being single I want a chance at finding a suitable companion other than my dog . Speaking of my dog, he is a very good-natured pit bull, so there can't be breed restrictions in the area. (Unless it is a Chihuahua ban, that would be a plus.)
I just lived for two years in the Seattle area; beautiful part of the country, but housing is out of my reach. I really NEED to own a home after renting my whole life. Also, the meth/drug problems and associated crime on the west coast is depressing. Been considering Spokane, but concerned about property taxes, rising housing prices, and the aforementioned meth problems. Also, doesn't seem like a good area for singles. But I love it's proximity to a lot of recreational activities and that it has the four seasons.
Open to suggestions. Anyone else looking for the same thing maybe we can form a group and move somewhere together and create our perfect community. I sort of identify with the kids in Escape from Witch Mountain. I feel like there is my Witch Mountain somewhere - just need to find it.
One place I might suggest you look into is LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN. A gem of a city in Southwestern Wisconsin, on the Mississippi River. Population about 60,000. Seriously---Check into it--you may be really impressed!!
Ill just toss this one out there: Branson, Missouri? Maybe? Its got 4 mild seasons (summer can be really hot), lovely terrain, lots of outdoor activities, decent shopping, etc. Its kinda like a mini-Vegas in the show-aspect (not gambling). Lots of neon, traffic, shows, etc. However, there are lots of tourists in that area, so be warned. Housing costs are a bit high in Branson, but the immediate surrounding areas should be rather cheap. Anyways, check it out if you want, you might like it!
I would second Jay. Asheville, NC is beautiful but it's not going to have that bohemian eclectic vibe she's looking for, well, at least not like NY City.
There's no place like New York for that kind of feel, but Asheville is definitely home to a Bohemian, granola, artsy community and is drawing people from all over. TheLongestJourney..., I would advise you to go spend a long weekend there and see for yourself. I've traveled quite a lot, and the only place I've seen that is similar to Asheville in that regard is Portland, OR. Also, I think you'll be quite pleased with the outdoor activities that are readily available in the area.
Do you like the cold? Maybe Alaska would be good for you -- it's a prime place for a single woman to find a mate, there's plenty of outdoors stuff to do. Anchorage is a good sized city.
I think you should check out Colorado. It is mountainous, sunny, the summers aren't horrible, and the Denver metro area is a great place for singles. The state has tons of recreational opportunities. The only problem is affordable housing...I believe it can be found, but probably not in Denver. However, there are also lots of other wonderful towns in Colorado. Visit the forum there and see what you find.
