Anyone that would claim that the Las Vegas area is the prettiest in the country really, really needs to see MORE of the country.
It's a totally manufactured environment that is flashly, tacky and way over the top. The suburbs are filled by almost identical houses that all look similar. And, as I mentioned earlier, it's absolutely ground zero for the housing meltdown. The surrounding desert area is stark, but beautiful in its own way - if you don't like greenery.
Of course, I do understand that a certain mindset from similar areas would find it desirable.
Scottsdale is another suggestion. Yes it does get pretty warm during the summer, but it's got everything else: Mountains, low crime, great shopping, palm trees, nightlife, restaurants, art galleries, etc...some people can be rather pretentious, but that's not everyone.
OP--go to Las Vegas or its suburbs. The mountains are gorgeous, and there are also palm trees. It's either there or southern Cali, and LV is a lot cheaper.
And if you took the time to read my second post you'll see I also suggested San Antonio which isn't a college town and has tons of stuff to do

Leave the strip and it's much cleaner. The strip is just a very tiny portion of the whole metro. I spent a good amount of my time in the suburbs and away from the city.

I was referring to the whole metro.
