The roots of the place have always been transportation and commerce.

Did you know that the orginal terminus for the Chattanooga rail line was suppose to be in what is now Norcross. but the rail company thought that the land was to swampy so they decided to build the depot on top of a ridge 10 miles south of the Norcross location. Jonh Trasher thought that the land in Norcross was to swampy for a Major Depot

Think about it instead of Us talking about Metro Atlanta we would be talking about Metro Norcross. LOL

St. Louis if I am not mistaken is similar in being a city that was to be built somewhere else. It was origionally planned to be at the Mississippi and Missouri River confluence but was shifted 10 miles South due to being both too swampy and a low-water navigation hazard just south of the confluence. (the last one before hitting the Gulf of Mexico) There are also reasons related to boundary changes in 1763 as well which tied into religion.

Iowa City was created (on paper) by an act of the Governor, Robert Lucas, who wanted a capital for the Iowa Territory closer to the center of the territory. After the Legislature passed the act creating the new capital, surveyors looked for a good place to build the city and found the present-day site of Iowa City.

Iowa City was then capital of the state for about 20 years before the capital was moved to Des Moines--again to be closer to the center of the state.

It was all about timber here. They cut down trees, and shiped out the wood. The city was started by a timber baron.
