Actually about 75% non-Hispanic white, including white immigrants from Eastern Europe who are a different ethnicity and make up at least another few percent. But at any rate, if having a clear ethnic majority automatically meant "ethnic harmony," then Europe would not be having so many of the racial/ethnic issues today in areas where total non-nationals of a given Western European state, including other native Europeans make up 12% or less of the population.

Yes, you would be ignorant if you believed that Portland (or Seattle) were a racist city.

Europe has been 100% white for the last 2 millenia... the fact that there's even been a little change in the demographics is a drastic change for Europe. America's only been around for 200 years, and there were already non-whites there before the whites showed up... Europe and America are definitely not fair comparisons.

This might be a good reference point:

Hawaii definitely has had and still has issues with race, particularly with blacks and asians.
Yes, I did say Hawaii does have racism, and I did hear about some of the race issues that Barack Obama had when he was growing up here. Everywhere has racism. But I would say people in Hawaii are more accepting of people of different ethnic backgrounds.

yes, many local aja are very, very racist toward african americans. couldn't believe some of the stuff i saw and heard when i lived there. worse stuff than i saw on us mainland.
I'm just wondering, are you an African American who experienced racism in Hawaii? I'm not African American, so I'd like to hear about your experiences, if you are one.

I don't know what you mean about "local aja." However, I lived here in Hawaii my entire life, and I don't remember ever seeing a local person act "very, very racist" towards African Americans. But yes, Hawaii does have racism. It's just generally more passive.

I was there in the '90s, I had received a prestigious fellowship to work/study at UH. I loved it, but then again, I was at the university, and I also had made many local connections before and knew many people on the island. But all and all, as a family, my wife and I were not treated all that well.

Local AJA. Americans of Japanese ancestry. Japanese Americans.

I'm walking down the streets in Waikiki one day, and in front of me are four young girls from an African American halau in town for a hula festival.....Also in front of me are a couple local guys, one of whom saw the teens laughing and having fun, and said, loud enough for anyone to hear, "Typical Ni*****."

I have also been told by local Japanese Americans that many say openly that they will NEVER rent properties to African Americans.........

My wife gets stopped by cops in Manoa, where we lived, when she walked in an adjacent neighborhood because she had seen a sign for a garage sale. Seems that a woman in the neighborhood saw her walking and figured she was a criminal. Cops got excoriated by a certain UH officer the next day. I insisted on bending the chief's ear. I got a half-assed apology......

Just a few instances of many. My wife will never set foot in Hawaii again.

I'm sorry to hear about your negative experiences (but congratulations on getting a prestigious fellowship!). Yeah, Hawaii still does have its fair share of racism.
