We are considering a move to the area from out West, our main concern are safe schools, next on my list would be shopping!! Any info on weather too? We are aware that it will be quite a change from here and know we will acclimate with time. We are also big into hunting and camping is that near by?

Thanks for any info.

Just curious- why are you focused on Ball Ground? Not that there's anything wrong with Ball Ground, but it's a very small town that's kinda out of the way, so is something in particular sending you there?

We have 3 boys and would like to have room for them to run!! I picked Ball ground for the proximity to the larger towns/cities. We are open to other areas as well, any suggestions???

Well, I wouldn't say that Ball Ground has great proximity to any of the larger towns- at least not any better than other places. While Cherokee County's schools are very good, they tend to be better as you get to the more populated areas- and Ball Ground Elementary is a very old, very tired school that will be replaced in a few years, but until then, it's in pretty rough shape. IMO, you'd be better served looking in Woodstock or Holly Springs- you can still find some larger properties, and you get even better proximity to shopping, work, etc.

Thanks for that info. I'm not sure if this is a dumb question or not, but is there much change to the weather (humidity) the further north you go? I read some sites that say a big difference and some that note none at all? The closer in you move the less tolerant of boys and their antics? Not bad boys but we have dirt bikes and bb guns!!!

You are not going to see any Major Weather changes in the Metro Atlanta area, IF you get up in the the GA mountain (Blue ridge/North Dawson cty) it will be cooler, and not as humidit. may get some frost/snow/ice sometimes.)

If you are looking for place for the boys to go dirt biking, I would be looking for about 3-5 ac Not in a HOA controled neighboorhood. Most HOA are not going to allow them. HOA also tend to be in planned sub/div of lots from 1/5ac to about 1ac. You might look in Northern Forsyth, Southern Dawson Also. Traffic and getting to/from work are importain. Where is work?

There is a Dawson, GA (city) which is between Albany and Columbus(way south of Atlanta). Since you were looking at Ball Ground i'm assuming you mean Dawson county(Dawsonville is the county seat) It's about 30 miles due east of Ball Ground. However you would take GA 400 into Atlanta if you needed to and it does have a toll of .50 if you travel within I-285(Dunwoody/Sandy Springs area) vs I-575 and I-75 from Ball Ground so I don't know if that is a concern.

Ballground isn't that "out there". Sure, from downtown Atlanta, it's about 50 miles, but from the start of Atlanta's built-up/developed/urbanized area, it's only about eight miles away from the northern limits of Canton. Everything you really need can be found in Canton or Woodstock. Canton is anywhere from eight to fourteen miles away, Holly Springs is about fifteen miles away, and Woodstock is anywhere from nineteen to twenty one miles away. If you need to go to a mall, Town Center is a quick drive down I-575 to exit one, a twenty seven mile drive.

Ballground is in rural north Cherokee, but there are plenty of neighborhoods in the area. I'm not exactly certain if the elementary schools feed into the Teasley/Cherokee districts, or the Creekland/Creekview districts. You might want to find this out, as the latter tends to be of a bit better quality. However, with the exception of a couple elementary schools in Canton, all schools in Cherokee County are of decent to superior quality. The building of Ballground Elementary may be old, however, but as another poster mentioned, it'll probably be replaced soon.

The area, in my opinion, depending on where you'll be able to live, is also more conducive to dirt bikes, atv's and the like, given its rural environment.

The mountains are only a good fifteen miles away near Jasper from Ballground.
