Hello all,

Here's my deal. I was born in Albany in 1980. I have family in Americus. I lived in Albany until I was 9 years old and then moved away. The last time that I have visited Albany and Americus was in the early 90's when I was 12 or so. I am now 31 with a family. We are flying down for my cousins wedding in Americus GA. While I'm down there, I would like to visit my hometown and see the house and apartment that I spent my childhood at.

Here's the catch. I am white, my wife is black. Therefore, my kids are mixed obviously. I have read some threads on this board about the "treatment" of some people. But I don't want to believe them. My question is, am I naive? What is the attitude down there about bi-racial couples and kids? I know this may seem like I'm buying in to the stereo-type of the south, but I have not been there since I was a kid.

I look forward to visiting, and I can't wait to get down there and grub on some Krystal burgers and some Sonny's BBQ. Any other suggestions would be welcomed.

Cheers.

I think you will be OK for the most part. You will get more stares down there in Americus or Albany than you would say here in the Atlanta Metro or other larger cities, but at the end of the day, people will be cordial to you and your family. Even though S. GA is a place where change comes to slowly, I'd say that people down there are generally accommodating of interracial families, at least in public.

I live in Macon and there doesn't seem to be that much of a big deal, at least not for me, and I don't know any people that would openly stare. I guess it's up to your knowledge of your family. Are you afraid of them specifically, or just the general consensus? Either way, it's not your problem, it's theirs. Be proud.
