I would say also look into Waleska and Canton in Cherokee County. There are several great communities in Canton (Great Sky, Governors Preserve, and Laurel Canyon) with beautiful homes and fabulous views. Plus, they are centrally located and have great in-community ammenities. Good luck.

It's best to avoid any type of political references, Irish.. but I'll say this much - unlike many, I do not narrow my mind to possibilities by affiliating myself with only one party. I vote for whoever has the best ideas.

My comment was based however, on the fact that Georgia typcially has lower scores compared to many other parts of the nation, and while there are specific schools that stand out as being very good, the overall status of the educational system here is NOT good. The kids in Soviet Georgia stand a better chance of naming all of our presidents in order than our own kids do.

The school system here is 100% better than the system in Florida. To me, it was a BIG step up.

I like to use realtor.com when I am checking prices and available houses. Zip code 30710 is close to Chattanooga, about 80 miles north of Atlanta and nestled in the mountains.
Prices are very reasonable also.

3) Highlands, NC: Smaller town feel, touristy (but expensive). Kind of like Mayberry with Rodeo Drive dollars. LOL

4) Gatlinburg, TN: Yeah, it's borderline tacky-touristy, but it's a neat place overall with good places to eat out, and galleries, stores, etc. Friendly folks. Traffic can be bad, though.

5) Dahlonega, GA: For the reasons I mentioned. Small town, but active, art/galleries, and the mountain regions and towns offer stuff to explore. Outdoor activities galore. Not that far from Atlanta or the northern burb shopping areas if you want them.

6) Atlanta, GA: I'm in the burbs now, but if I HAD to live intown, I would have to pick Virginia Highlands or Atlantic Station so I could be right in the middle of it all. Of course, with that middle comes the $$ cost of living.

7) Charleston, SC: My last pick. Great shopping and restaurants. Good tourism. Low crime and very very clean (if you stay out of the northern area). The only disadvantages are the humidity in summer and threat of hurricanes.


Hmmmm.. and why no, Birmingham is NOT on that list. LOL Sorry - I can't vote for Birmingham either. Between the constant nasty weather they get in the Springtime, and certain other things - nah. It's not horrible. Just not anyplace I'd pick.

Add Elijay, GA. to that list. Otherwise, I say DITTO! Why limit yourself to 20/30 miles outside of Atlanta.
