My husband and I are looking to purchase a "vacation" home in northern Georgia in the next few years, and hopefully move there full time a few years later. One of the main reasons is to get closer to my grandchildren! I currently work as a Nurse Practitioner for an Internal Medicine office, seeing patients both in the office (half the day) and making rounds on inpatients at the hospital (the other half). I see myself still working in this field when we make the final move, so of course I'll be looking for a job down there. Does anyone have any information regarding the job market in that area of Georgia? I've read that I should apply for my license long in advance, so I'll keep that in mind. Any information and/or feedback is welcomed

If I were you, I would choose something that is in exurban Atlanta, just in case there is an issue with the job in the future. North Georgia generally speaking has high unemployment. You can obviously buy a good priced vacation home right now, but rural Georgia all over is in tough times.

I don't work in the medical field, but it is not a good time as you know. I would research more areas closer to metro Atlanta to work in counties such as Cherokee, Forysth, Dawson, Hall, etc. These are areas where jobs are a bit more plentiful than far North Georgia. Good luck.

Blairsville is nice. Look, too, in the Ellijay area. We have a place in Blue Ridge, which is 18 miles north of Ellijay and about 25 miles south west of Blairsville. It is a beautiful place. You cannot go wrong in that whole area.

Appreciate your input. Things here in Michigan are pretty huge too, a lot of unemployment and people losing their health insurance; makes it tough on those of us who want to take care of them. I'm wondering if I might have to consider long commutes to and from work in order to have the home located in the area we want to settle down in. My young son lived in Ellijay for a little while, it looked okay too. We most definitely want to avoid living too close to Atlanta to avoid the traffic. thanks to everyone for their feedback!
