Am considering relocating to Powder Springs Georgia. What is the city like, what are the crime statistics?
Why are houses so cheap there?

Powder Springs is in Southwest Cobb County, near the Paulding County line. It's somewhat in-between interstates I-75 and I-20 so off the radar for some people. In terms of convenience, if you need either of those two highways it's about a 9-12 mile drive to either/or. The East/West Connector (Barrett Parkway) is on the edge of the City, which basically runs from around I-285 North to Kennesaw. The next town West is Hiram which has a row of numerous chain stores and restaurants. Powder Springs itself is more of a sleepier non-destination town where people tend to pass through it going from one place to another, but there are a handful of restaurants, banks, antique shops, and a Publix with a couple of Kroger stores on the outskirts. The Silver Comet Trail runs through it. The home prices are typically lower here because of the distance from major highways, transit options, etc.

Overall crime is not "bad" overall, but it has increased over the last few years (much the same as numerous other suburbs in the metro area). There are several nicer neighborhoods in the area, but a handful of areas to completely avoid, too. The demographics have shifted in the last decade so what was once a predominately older, white "country/retiree" demographic is now much more mixed in ages, race, etc. The major schools in the area (McEachern High, Tapp Middle, Compton Elementary school) have according to locals, degraded considerably in the last few years, prompting those with school age kids to migrate north a few miles to another school district. If you don't have kids, it's not as much an issue.

Powder Springs has an unincorporated area that reaches all the way north of Dallas Hwy, at least up to Due West Rd. Once you get above Macland, you are looking at much better schools, the cream of the crop. Great area to live in.
