My husband and I are graduating college in April and will be applying for high school teaching jobs. I'll be certified in English, he'll be primarily looking for a coaching job (experienced in basketball, football, and track) but will also be certified to teach Social Studies. We live in Mississippi where there are plenty of teaching jobs, but we're also applying in other areas. Ideally, we'd like to leave MS. Lately we've been hearing Georgia is a good place to look.

What areas of GA should we focus on when looking for jobs? Of course, we're looking for an area where teaching jobs aren't completely impossible to find. Also, an area where a young couple (I'm early 20's, he's late 20's) would enjoy living...no rural/nothing to offer areas, we can get teaching jobs like that here in MS, easily. We're looking for a cool area. We love outdoor activities, arts, live music, good restaurant scene, etc.

Any ideas? Thanks so much for your help!

Gwinnett County on Atlanta's NE side is probably your best bet --- HUGE school district, largest in Georgia and 15th largest in the U.S. with about 165,000 students in 18 high school clusters. Given the economic state of public education in recent years, it's probably the only system in Georgia that still hires new teachers right out of school, due to the sheer size, steady growth, routine turnover and retirement factors. I think they hired about 600 new teachers for this school year.

You might still want to check the Atlanta Public schools, They still might need some teachers to replace the 100? supended due to the cheating scandle.

Other then them, there are a lot of layed off teacher in Georgia, So GA districts are not hiring much, and there will be many appying for each job.

Actually, it ended up being 300ish teachers.

You have to get the job first. Teaching jobs are still incredibly difficult to find in GA. While the state revenues seem to be ticking up, most systems will see declines in local revenues which provide the majority of funding for schools.

The greatest demand is for science, math, special ed and foreign language.

City of Decatur reported that they had 300 applications for each teaching position and DeKalb County literally had 1000s for a small handful of openings.

I heard as many as 600 applied for a social studies position in the Gainesville City School system.

Hall County told me they are only hiring certified teachers for para-pro jobs now because there are so many teachers out of work.
