Hi,

Can anyone please tell me what the area is like around Hall St SE/Eastern Ave SE? I am not sure if its Oakdale or Baxter. Is it a safe area?

Regards,
Evyn

It's pretty hood over there. You won't get murdered or anything but it's probably one of the worst areas in GR. I had some friends that lived over there and there and their cars got broken in to pretty often etc. If you're white you're probably more of a target though since it's a predominately black area.

Hey, let's not start a race war on C-D.

When I was a kid, I lived a few blocks from that intersection. It was a nice neighborhood. For 22 years I owned a machine shop about a mile from that intersection. I was there until I retired a few years ago.

It's not a good area any more. During daylight hours it's fairly safe. I would not go into that area when it's dark.

My shop was a 7,000 sq. ft. building. There were many bullet holes in my building.

My advice is don't go there unless you have to go there. If you must, only go during daylight hours...morning is best.

Good Luck

Buddy in the area for about 3 months.. had a party.. people showed up and beat them down with crobars, put one of my friends in a coma for a week. If you're looking for something in grand rapids but more affordable go to the lower west side.

Not to be negative on my city but....if you have to ask the question, you probably shouldn't move into that neighborhood.

Bear in mind perspective. If you're from a big urban area, you probably won't think much of it. It's not the east side of Detroit or the south side of Chicago by any stretch of the imagination but it is GR's version for sure.

On the positive, there are plenty of c-h-e-a-p houses to buy, likely for less than what you could rent an apartment for. Keep to yourself and leave those drugs alone and you won't have any problems with the locals.

A little bit farther east--the neighborhood at Hall & Fuller does have a neighborhood group (Fuller Avenue Neighbors) that at least is trying to get some of the nieghborhood cleaned up.
