I just moved to the Grand Rapids area. Someone mentioned to me that I could put just two snow tires on my vehicle since it is front wheel drive. Can you get by with two on a front wheel drive or is four better? Since I am not native to this area I appreciate your help.

Recommended is 4. That way the back end doesn't try to pass the front as quick when you are stopping, or turning. And yes, a FWD will sling the rear end out around a corner, or in a stop on ice or wet snow.

I have done it both ways on FWD vehicles and I always put on a set of 4 now, there really is a difference. Best set I have ever drove on is the Bridgestone Blizzak WS70's, second best set was the Firestone Winterforce.

2 on the front will work, all 4 are better.

You can get by with all season tires but snow tires will give you much better handling.

My family has been in Michigan for several generations and I do not personally know a single person who uses snow tires.
We're spread out from Grand Rapids to Traverse City to da U.P.

But I would definitely get four of the same tires if at all possible.

If you are not used to winter driving, there are several good videos on the internet that give good advice for driving in the snow and what to do (and NOT to do) when you do start sliding.

I use all season tires and they typically work good. Don't go cheap in tires, they will save your life in the snow. Get 4 good good all season tires and you'll be just fine.

After a while you'll be used to spinning out, don't worry. You'll start fishtailing and just get out of it by second nature, then when you do it you can feel accomplished in life (ok I exaggerated a little bit, but it will get normal)

A front wheel drive car is also easier.

Unless, you go with a four wheel drive.

Good quality all season tires---four of them---works good for me. If you're not used to driving in snow and/or ice go to an open parking lot and practice stopping and starting and learning to correct yourself when you fish-tail or spin out. And when you're on the road, leave a lot a room in between you and the car ahead of you in case you have to stop fast and start sliding.

Ditto on Wayland Woman's post. Nothing like an empty open parking lot to learn how to get control when you hit ice. Good tread on your all-season tires may be good enough. If you must drive in white-out conditions to get home from work, etc.---go slow and turn your flashers on if it's really bad so idiots going all out behind you do not rear end you. Welcome to winterwonderland! (I'm jealous as I'm in AZ this holiday season...)
