Due to the fact you will already most likely spend a lot of time learning on the west side you might just as well live there too. The NE and NW areas both can differ a bit block by block but there is no "quote" unsafe areas. For that matter, I would not be afraid to walk in any district of GRR, as I already have. Just keep in mind it is city living of course. Lock things up and use common sense and you will find the city enjoyable. Anywhere you go something bad can happen but in general terms the city is quite safe. Many GVSU students live on the west side. Students get free busing which is great.

In saying that, the nicest areas of the west side are generally found west of Alpine/John Ball zoo region. The NE is OK as well but requires a transfer for busing and is just further away with no added benefits unless you can get a great deal on housing. If you are considering the NE side you might as well consider the entire city unless you are going to GVSU on Michigan st, which than Belknap park would be great for you.

West Fulton has a 24 hour coffee house and late pizza. Downtown is where the party happens. I am sure you will enjoy staying in Grand Rapids.

I am not sure what you are looking at cost wise. This could determine a bit. The area above, though some diversity exist, is largely home to the Mexican crowd home. The area is a bit more poor but does have many authentic stores and eats. Some blocks can have more trouble than others around there as local teens at times have to tag much kinda messing with what could be a much healthier appearance. Again, not dangerous but certainly would consist of a different neighborhood feel. Probably unless you can get a good rental there for a good price it would not be my first choice. Housing is tight and streets are narrow. Apartments, lower and upper redone houses, are the majority in the rental stock.

Based on your desires, depending on income, the west side probably is the first place I would look, though some nice apt warehouses can be found close by on North Monroe ave. just north of DT but cost are a little higher. Full two story rentals are a bit harder to come by but can be found. Duplexes are somewhat spread out as well but can be found.

For medium pricing uptown is a fantastic region with great districts and may offer the most selection. Downtown does have plenty of nice living options as well but cost a bit more.

I do not know if I can answer all your questions but I'll give it my best shot. Let me know if you want some good rental sites for the region.

To ask people to give opinions on the safety of 40 different addresses is the wrong way to go about this. Now that the weather is nice, drive over to GR, get out of your car, walk in some of these neighborhoods in the evening and see what you think. You'll get a pretty good idea of how safe an area is or not. Plus, there's a good chance you'll live in 5 or more different houses during your college career. At least a couple of those will probably suck.
