We are relocating to the GR area next year and are looking to purchase or build a single family home. We have 3 kids (ages 16 months and 1 month old twins) and are looking for a safe area with good daycare options and schools as well as a neighborhood with a lot of kids/young families. We love the outdoors and would love to live where we can ride our bikes to get to a bike trail (as opposed to driving to the bike trails). Any suggestions for neighborhoods we should look at? My husband and I both work from home but would like to be in commutable distance to downtown in case our work situation should change in the future.

East Grand Rapids or around the Rose Lake area might fit your needs. East Grand Rapids for school systems~Rose Lake for outdoor activities you mentioned.

There are a ton of areas that fit this, but price range would be helpful because that will narrow things down quite a bit.

I think you had a memory lapse, it's Reeds Lake, not Rose Lake. Understandable though, Rose's is the name of the long time restaurant on Reeds Lake. No big deal, just didn't want the OP to needlessly drive around looking for a Rose Lake.

Under $400 would get you pretty much everything you want. I would actually check out Walker and Forest Hills area. Both have great trail systems and good schools (although FH is better). EGR you're not going to get as much home for $400K, and property taxes are pretty high.
