does anyone have experience with or advice regarding remodeling an older home in East Grand Rapids? If we end up moving here, it's likely we would need to add a bedroom and possibly a bath onto an older home. are there many restrictions regarding this type of renovation? thanks so much.

Call Insignia Homes (616) 940-1703
Their sign is literally everywhere in EGR.

Remodeling the homes is something of a pasttime in EGR. Many many homes have additions built onto them. You will find the process well fleshed out with plenty of experts (from various companies) to guide you through.

I haven't done this yet, but we've gone through the design process.... there are restrictions but nothing extreme.

The biggest issues you'll have are setback limits (you cannot get too close to the property lines). The city publishes their code and is very open about it. I've also sat in plenty meetings where they exempt additions from code if it's got a good reason.

It's a small town where everyone knows each other. Nobody wants to make enemies.

I've seen those Insignia signs in my neighborhood in Cascade. Last summer, I've also seen them in Holland on the waterfront and around town in Pentwater. They do a good job blending in the additions on the original houses.

Give PHB Construction a call. On their website there's a bathroom done in EGR that turned out fine. www.grandrapids-remodeling.com Small company but serious about craftsmanship.
