I wouldn't marry anyone I didn't live with first. I really don't think most first time marriages really are based on the idea of being 'stuck' with someone who may not be as you think forever.
FYI - the rate of divorce is higher for those who cohabited prior to marriage than those who did not.
What marriage is today is the union of two individuals. The benefit is that it is the ultimate expression of commitment to one person and the country for whatever reason gives tax breaks to the married. Marriage applies to any two people who wish to make that commitment.
For the whole 2000 years on Western European Tradition, marriage has meant a man and a women abstaining from pre-marital sex, and agree to join together until death do they part in a sexual union that prohibits other adulterous relationships and prohibits Divorce.
I cannot agree with that at all. Not one bit. Sounds to me like some naive Disney-esque version of human history.
Its a system of recognized coupling of man and women seen by society has good especially for off spring. Some animals also mate for life. There are a lot of groupings in life that has reasons of safety to strength in providing too.
Women usually do it for economic security, men usually for regular sex. Invariably both are disappointed.
That was indeed the "traditional" model of modern marriage, however with the development of the two income household, that has receded in prominence. In fact it is interesting to note, despite recent right-wing protestations to the contrary, two income households even when controlled for income have lower divorce rates.
