Why People Are Divided by Politics and Religion

Quote:
I wonder if any Freepers are aware of Jon Haidt. His theories explain a lot and explain why we are in this current battle of Freedom vs. Fairness.

He is a self-identified liberal so don’t let your friends when you explain this to them get away with saying he is a right wing wacko.
An interesting read @ Why People Are Divided by Politics and Religion that just might help us understand one another. And yes, he deals with certainties that don't exist in humans.

Default we love conflict

as americans we love conflict and war, its a very 'us vs. them' mentality we have.
the more conservative the right becomes the more liberal the left becomes.in the old days you can get a left wing and a right wing on the same news show to talk about a subject ,they would respectfully disagree, then they wouldnt even talk to each other, then they shout past each other, then they wouldnt even be on the same news show, then they would have their own news show, now the left and the right have their own networks!!

Because it's the best way to rule chandala.
Divide et impera. Confuse with contradictory ideas and rule them.
Read protocols.

Different core beliefs in both cases. To show how far liberals have gone to left just remember and look at what JFK said and policies he promoted.

I have much affinity for Haidt's theory, though I find it to be a bit simplistic and excessively dismissive of the human ability to reason. In essence, he argues that moral judgments are formed quickly and heuristically, rather than through deliberation or a careful rendering of pros and cons. I agree that in the real world, our daily behavior is governed very much according to Haidt's assertions. There's little time to think things through. We have to decide, and our decisions by necessity have to be reflexive. But I'm not as sure about armchair deliberation that occurs at our leisure. It seems to me that people can and do evolve their positions based upon consideration of evidence, if only on those subjects where they don't have a strong vested interest already.

But as others have said, there's strong tendency to align one's opinions with those of one's group; and in turn, there is much evolutionary value in belonging to a group. People are divided according to what amounts to tribal identity, evidently, because such organization has survival value.

Because of weak minded individuals who ascribe to single party, or religious ideals without any understanding for others idea's. and with today's media being allowed to lie under the guise of journalism it has gotten much worse.

Some people like to be programmed to do what they are told and some like to do their own ways.

Religion should be barred from all political conversations because of the different religious beliefs, we'll never get anything done if we include every religion.

The notion that real differences exist in the upper reaches of the political world negates the idea that money talks, and the fact that it talks loud. Most people if asked outright about the relationship of the upper class, money, and power, would rightly assume the upper class and their political cronies are locked together in a symbiotic way, each needing the other to keep both their money AND their power. This is why it's laughable to expect that things will change in America, even though I and others hope for that change we know this relationship between those who wield power and those who have controll of money goes back to America's beginnings and will probably last as long as there is an American nation.

10. IN ORDER TO PUT PUBLIC OPINION INTO OUR HANDS WE MUST BRING IT INTO A STATE OF BEWILDERMENT BY GIVING EXPRESSION FROM ALL SIDES TO SO MANY CONTRADICTORY OPINIONS AND FOR SUCH LENGTH OF TIME AS WILL SUFFICE TO MAKE THE "GOYIM" LOSE THEIR HEADS IN THE LABYRINTH AND COME TO SEE THAT THE BEST THING IS TO HAVE NO OPINION OF ANY KIND IN MATTERS POLITICAL, which it is not given to the public to understand, because they are understood only by him who guides the public. This is the first secret.
11. The second secret requisite for the success of our government is comprised in the following: To multiply to such an extent national failings, habits, passions, conditions of civil life, that it will be impossible for anyone to know where he is in the resulting chaos, so that the people in consequence will fail to understand one another. This measure will also serve us in another way, namely, to sow discord in all parties, to dislocate all collective forces which are still unwilling to submit to us, and to discourage any kind of personal initiative which might in any degree hinder our affair. THERE IS NOTHING MORE DANGEROUS THAN PERSONAL INITIATIVE: if it has genius behind it, such initiative can do more than can be done by millions of people among whom we have sown discord. We must so direct the education of the GOYIM communities that whenever they come upon a matter requiring initiative they may drop their hands in despairing impotence. The strain which results from freedom of actions saps the forces when it meets with the freedom of another. From this collision arise grave moral shocks, disenchantments, failures. BY ALL THESE MEANS WE SHALL SO WEAR DOWN THE "GOYIM" THAT THEY WILL BE COMPELLED TO OFFER US INTERNATIONAL POWER OF A NATURE THAT BY ITS POSITION WILL ENABLE US WITHOUT ANY VIOLENCE GRADUALLY TO ABSORB ALL THE STATE FORCES OF THE WORLD AND TO FORM A SUPER-GOVERNMENT.

The Protocols of the Learned Elders of Zion. is, you can argue all you want to it is forgery or this and that; but a simple, unbiased glance outside the window proves that what is written is - true. Virtually every moment of life brings another proof to this. If forgery is as good as the real McCoy - it is real to me.

JFK would be considered a Tea Party radical today due to this speech about taxes:

Income Tax Cut, JFK Hopes To Spur Economy 1962/8/13 - YouTube

And let's not even talk about his military aggression.
