How is the US becoming a welfare state, when welfare has been cut back severely, due to the 2008 "recession"? The US is very, very far from becoming a welfare state, and never will become one.

The state cut off blind pensions to most blind people according to the Housing Authority. They have had to lower rent to all their blind tenants. It helps a little, but only a small portion of the pension went to rent. The blind pension was about $700. a month.

if people including those on food stamps just used some of that money to stockpile items used to make food from scratch, then if something did happen, then they would still have food to feed their family.
It would be impossible to stockpile food with food stamps. If they only bought rice and beans it wouldn't last all month.

The only panic would be in the stores that accept EBT cards otherwise, more of the people that are getting a free ride would be getting a job(s).

really? when I lived in Wisconsin, I knew someone who was getting $450 a month for just herself and 2 children. plus Wisconsin allows you to use any excess on next months money. this lady always had at least $150 a month to add on to next months food stamps. she could stock up very well for herself and her child.

I think "apocalypse" is a more descriptive word if the govt. stopped providing welfare, food stamps, SSI, free housing, medicaid, etc. IMHO, this is where the idea of zombie movies come from. Wild flesh eating people marauding the countryside. This is why there are preppers. They figure if the system ever collapses, then those dependent on government payments will take to robing and killing to get their free stuff. That's why their bug out locations are away from urban areas.

The US is not already a welfare state? Get serious. Check out the percentages of people on food stamps and other govt. programs. When you see the actual numbers that tells you we live in a welfare state. We have 45 million people on food stamps! Only about 1/2 the population works in a non government job. That 1/2 is supporting all the rest. That's a welfare state.

If welfare was to just stop America would become like any other third world nation. There are many who think we are heading there now and Obama is actually allowing the poor to flood the country. There will come a time when the system goes bust.

Welfare was meant to be a crutch to give people enough time to get back on their feet but now it is more like a wheelchair that people use/abuse to roll through life.

You mean SSI? That's a federal program, not state. And if you are blind, and meet the other requirements, you get it. Understanding Supplemental Security Income (SSI)-- SSI Eligibility

My first husband got SSI because he is blind. I don't know if he still does. At that time, he was unable to get a job because of his blindness. Companies simply wouldn't hire him.

There would be some chaos at first...look what happened to the Soviet Union when they became "capitalistic"....but then, folks who were REALLY in need would get help from the multitude of charities that are here....

And just so you know, the GOVERNMENT is NOT funding these welfare programs...we working folks are! And I'm tired of it!

SS and Medicare are NOT "welfare"...we paid for those benefits!

Wow, that's a frightening thought right there...society having "chaos" because someone else isn't giving a certain segment of citizens free money. I'd like some free money, where's my cut.
