I was wondering this for a while. just came to my head as I sat here. I look at animals and how we in general do not care about their well beings. Heck, even human life doesn't seem to matter in some parts of the world, so I ask you: what would an ET/Alien make us feel any different?
Honestly, any alien that arrived on Earth I'd bludgeon to death.
Any life form that is capable of reaching Earth is probably capable of destroying us. So with that said, I'd slaughter them pre-emptively so they don't get any ideas.

See, I'd like to think that if an alien race came here, we'd see them as being equal to humans in a lot of ways. Given they are clearly technologically superior, likely more intelligent overall, and must have some form of deeper thought (because if they didn't, I doubt they'd bother to talk to us or travel space). So they'd have all the qualities that make us human, so we'd consider them as deserving the same rights as humans.
But we're still killing our own over stupid ****, so I imagine the first thing we'd do to an alien is kill it.

People were killing what they deemed as "savages" during imperial colonial times.. I don't think it's any different if humans killed an alien.
When people disconnect another living being as a "creature," when they dehumanize/desensitize themselves enough, they lack feelings for the killed. Apathy can make acts of killing seem normal.. kinda a sick concept, but true.

How'd that work for Native Americans against the Europeans?

And in that vein, any alien race capable of reaching earth and got the first contact experience of being bludgeoned to death by the locals would more likely engage in hostile tactics for all future engagements. Basically, if they already got to earth, we are probably going to lose.

Or they would simply not engage at all.
Assuming that most intelligent life is like us, it's unlikely they'd make the effort to enslave us or take our planet if they thought that the costs would outweigh the benefits.

And this is why we can't have nice things.
Seriously. If they can cross interstellar space, they are more then capable of wiping out the entire planet. You'd get us all killed. Nice job.
As for murder....at first I think we'd value us more, I'd like to think that eventually we would be more moral about it though.

For the "general" people who you say "do not care"...I'd say no, it wouldn't make you feel any different.
Thankfully there are many of us who are not the "we" that you speak of.
