Exactly! If someone can't control their impulse to gamble away the rent it's not the fault of the casino. It's not like the casinos are dragging people in from the street and forcing them to gamble.
Agreed - do we blame Budweiser if someone gets drunk, gets in their car and kills someone? No we don't; well at least not yet. I'm sure we will see a lawsuit one of these days.
If there weren't casinos, there'd be bingo halls. I once volunteered at a church bingo hall. I thought these older ladies went there to have fun on a Thursday night. Wrong. They went to win money, and they were serious about it, with a dozen boards and their markers at the ready ... and heaven help the poor announcer who might say a wrong number.
There's no doubt about it.
I was just speaking of casinos in terms of where the psychology really comes into play.

They banned cigarette commercials from tv because smokers became addicted. I'm not a fan of any business that preys on people's vulnerabilities.
Casinos entrap gamblers with free booze on the gambling floor. They then offer up a membership card which they can use at various gambling machines. If a member manages to stay away for a while, they'll entice the member with discounts or free offers of their dinning and or hotel room above the casino. Majority of casinos don't have a visible clock on the wall. They don't want gamblers to keep track of how long they've been gambling. I've played video poker outside of casinos. I'll play $5 to $10 by putting the quarters in the right pocket and my winnings in my left pocket. When my right pocket is empty or I won more than I came in with then I leave. I once won $15 off $0.75 and walked out.
I have heard that in Louisiana the cost of the food in the Casino's restaurants was so inexpensive it even attracted people who did not have any interest in gambling.
It does sound like you gamble responsibly. I wish I knew how to help others learn to do that same.
The above describes professional football too, btw. Will be curious if that is ever bankrupted, which will effectively shut it down better than any law ever could. Since it's a multi billion dollar enterprise, I'm guessing the process may take awhile. Sort of like smoking: everyone now knows it is harmful, but making it socially unpalatable vs. outright banning has minimized, if not entirely eliminated, the harm.
Vice never really goes away.
Was just talking to a guy I discovered played four seasons for the Seahawks way back when, plus another five for the Chargers and Cardinals. More than 30 years ago. The comparison of "professional NFL player" to "racehorse" is closer than one might think, which he confirmed.
I am glad you brought that up. I have long been concerned about the head injuries that occur not only in professional football but in High School level as well, but there is one issue with the situation you have not mentioned, the men who play it seem to genuinely love the game. Even though they get injured many say they do not regret it. Why is that?
You really are opening up a can of worms now, as many gamblers will swear that they are ahead of the game. One reason that some of them might believe this is because they do not keep accurate records, or they do not consider their expenses.
I have never known anyone that is a winner in the long run. However, many syndicates today have automated betting programs that keep losses at a minimum and their rebates insure that they are always profitable.
Can you explain more about what betting syndicates are?
I wrote a research paper about women gamblers and observed women coming and going out of the casino. When you roll out of bed and have curlers in your hair and your pajamas on to come out and gamble you know they are addicted. Sad sight to see! Some of them coming out looked defeated and devastated, which made me think they probably spent money that should have been used for something else. I have been in pony keg stores and watched women go back and forth to their cars to scratch off lottery tickets, and have the back seat loaded with all kinds of stuff, which makes me think that they may be living in their cars. A horrible sight to see! For women they say that one of the reasons they do it is to fulfill an emotional need. Not all, but many.
Living out of their cars and still gambling? How sad . And once they get in that whole how do they get out of it?

Obviously we can't blame Budweiser completely but pandering to indulgences like that should create some sense of responsibility , and when we tried to ban alcohol in the past with Prohibition unfortunately it did not work out too well. People could not give it up.

I agree I think it is such a low form of business one that makes money harming others, but I have never seen advertising for gambling casinos. Do they exist? They probably do not even need to advertise.
