Immigrants - legal and illegal - don't come to the US for welfare benefits. They come here to work, because they can often make a lot more money than in their home countries. For legal immigrants at a certain level, furthering their careers and gaining experience is also a big draw. The way to curb illegal immigration is to cut off access to work and the best way to do that is to penalize employers who hire them.

A generalized list of eligibility requirements for welfare programs...

▪ A basic lack of gainful employment opportunity through either lack of places of employment or lack of job skill.

▪ A commitment to self-sufficiency is necessary before any potential recipient can begin to receive benefits. Heads of household must enter into an agreement they will become self-sufficient within a certain time-frame.

▪ A commitment to cooperation must be signed by the heads of household that they will comply with and continue all regulations and requirements while receiving aid.

▪ Dependent children must be living in the household. There are some exceptions, but generally all dependants must be within the home.

▪ All minors must be attending school during school days.

▪ All minors and dependants must be fully and appropriately immunized.

▪ The recipient must be 18 years of age.

▪ You must be a legal and permanent resident of the state to which you are applying.

▪ You must be a citizen of the United States or a qualified non-citizen legal resident. (restrictions apply).

▪ A commitment to accuracy and honesty during the program.

▪ All monetary resources must be divulged. This includes cash within the home, in checking or savings accounts and items of value in possession such as jewelry or electronics.

▪ A household financial budget must be created and adhered to.

Does that same list apply to section 8, which is one of the biggest welfare programs?

The function of the immigration system fundamentally is to ensure that people who belong in the U.S. live here unmolested and to send back people who don't belong here. Donald Trump made a major campaign issue over the number of people here illegally, estimated to be around 11 million people. Mr. Trump's politically attractive solution was to "build a wall" along the Mexican border. The problem is that it is easy to get into the U.S., a free country legally. Staying legally is another issue. Threads have focused on the problem of "anchor babies," see No More Anchor Babies?? , a thread I started, Solution for Problem of "14th Amendment" Birthright Babies, and the wall. My personal preference is to give mothers a choice of returning to their countries of origin with the babies or leaving without them, thereby terminating their parental rights.

But none of this deals with the real problem; returning people who are here illegally in a prompt manner so that they can't sink deep roots into their communities, or simply disappear. As the article I linked at the top of the OP states, the immigration court system is badly broken. Basically, nothing moves. What is needed is a big surge of hiring of immigration judges and judges to handle appeals. The system has to work in a manner that cases are heard within weeks, not years. And the writ of the courts must be enforced. If coming here illegally is futile, people won't bother. If the word on the street is that the system is toothless, they will come, Trump or no Trump.

In short, there is no cheap solution. We must fund the immigration court system. Generously.
Do you know how easy it is for them to just come back ?

The only way to stop illegal immigration is not by erecting walls - although border control is important - but by taking away the incentive to come here in the first place. No anchor babies. No jobs. If a business owner knowingly employs illegal immigrants, hit them with such fine that they would never, ever want to do it again. Any illegal immigrant involved in drug trafficking or a violent crime who is deported and comes back gets 10 years automatically added to their sentence, no parole. It would result in temporary overcrowding.. but only temporary.

They come here because there's an incentive for them to come.

I suspect that if the immigrants know through "word on the street" that they won't be able to stay or work they won't come in the first place. The rub is inability to enforce existing laws, both for the migrants and their employers.

For more see The backwards liberal immigration logic. Getting rid of the 14th Amendment is like killing an ant with a sledgehammer; lots of collateral damage. We need the other courts reformed. On of my civil matters has been "ready for trial" since July 2017 in a supposedly expedited commercial part, not a peep from the court. Criminal matters linger will those out on bail re-offend and witnesses disappear. Plea bargains with wrist-slap sentences are the result.

All very good and well but I'll take the wall first.

The thing is that any piece of legislature can be torn up when a pro illegal immigrant, pro amnesty President takes office.
A physical wall is not so easily taken down.

It is ridiculous that we are even having this conversation. What other country in the world allows people to stay that have broken immigration laws? We even take it an extra step by giving many of these people welfare benefits and President Obama even listened to their demands for citizens rights. Crazy.
Even our neighbors, Canada and Mexico have strict immigration laws that they do enforce.

Why doesn't America enforce our laws? We have a President that is trying to do just that and he is being accused by his opponents of being worse than Hitler.

Illegal immigration costs us billions of dollars yet there are those who are happy to allow this problem to continue. WHY?
