* Doctors for most part have stopped prescribing opioids under any circumstances.
* about 100 million people in this country live with chronic pain
* OTC NSAID's don't work for them
* in the amounts they need to control pain they'll die from liver/kidney failure first
* many have been pushed off their pain meds abruptly and are going through withdrawals
* this leaves them with 3 choices:
a. live with the sometime unbearable pain
b. commit suicide
c. buy opioids on the street and risk death from OD
They've tried to get other doctors to help them to no avail. Many doctors hang signs on their front door "No pain patients accepted".
I don't know the answer. I have an acquaintance that has been addicted to pain pills for many years. She thinks she is o.k. because she quit drinking alcohol. Another person I know drinks and takes Xanax in high doses everyday. Both of these people are just surviving each day. Its very sad but I don't think pain pills are the answer.

Are these acquaintances consuming to blunt pain or are they just garden-variety addicts with no reason to consume other than to get high to escape life's drudgeries?
Buying an illegal drug from criminals is going to make your life much more difficult. Better hope it's not laced with fentanyl or you might find yourself dead. If you don't die, you might find yourself in prison.

Very true, which is why deaths from heroin skyrocketed after the CDC put out their guidelines in 2016 calling for more restrictions on Dr's prescribing painkillers. The CDC, then the DEA made no efforts to address the distinction between addicts and legitimate pain sufferers. They just lumped both together and said, "NO!"
Consequently, innocent people who couldn't stand the pain went to the streets or Internet sources and began buying unregulated substances and started OD'ing, killing themselves.
In the criminal justice system, you are innocent until proven guilty. In the regulatory system, you are guilty until proven innocent. It's awful, because those who need pain meds are denied and either forced to suffer or resort to buying them illegally at an inflated price, while those who are addicted to pain meds switch to illegal drugs. All it does is make the problem worse.

Another aspect often overlooked about this, when these tough new prescription drug laws went into effect, NOT A SINGLE pharma company tried to legally fight or challenge them!!
Keep in mind, this was at a time when opioids were flying off the shelves, docs everywhere writing millions of scripts for them, and the companies that were raking in billions off this dont care if Govt cracks down on their cash cow?? YEAH RIGHT! Something seriously wrong here.
Seems like this was a HUGE wealth re-distribution, from the US to the mexican cartels, they knew once addicts could no longer get opiate painkiller from their doctor, heroin was mysteriously available everywhere and for very cheap...this was planned from the start imo, and now the cartels weigh their cash by the dump truck load.
There is just NO WAY the cartels can CONSISTENTLY keep the entire US supplied in heroin, enough to cause a nationwide epidemic, without some level of collusion, especially in a post 9-11 world, and if you ever notice, there is never any talk about going after the source of the heroin problem, its always local, thats a big red flag to me.
This leads to all sorts of behaviors including increased use of alcohol, illegal drugs, and legal in some places pot. Then there are those who have been stockpiling 'good' drugs for years just in case and it turns out they were right.
I believe pain should be treated and simply allowing people to suffer is not acceptable. It is inhumane. We treat our pets better than this.
A friend of mine is having major surgery at Duke. And she has been told they have a no opioid policy so their intention is to let her suffer instead of giving her a few doses of something that works. Shame on them! This is wrong.
Every time I get in a car, I could hit someone. It's possible. So should no one be allowed to drive because of what MIGHT happen? Guns are sold in this country every minute of every day and they can be used to kill people. We have no problem with that. But we refuse painkillers to those who need them and feel righteous about it.
I believe the real truth is that people who want to use have always found their substance of choice and they always will. All these new policies will only keep these meds out of the hands of people who really need them.
My dad who is mid 70 said there's no pain pills when he broke him arm he went through painful rehab and all they use is hot pads and tiger balm to help with the pain no meds.
Today people are all afraid of pain and they will pop whatever when they feel pain, that's the problem.
