I think that if parents were automatically charged with felonies when their kids bring guns to school and shoot other kids, it would go a long way toward reducing this problem.
Parents are the responsible parties in this situation. I don't understand why "so sorry" "what a tragedy" and "wherever did he find the gun?" is good enough for murder???
I think they are probably sued and forced into bankruptcy. Or they lose all their money to the lawyers first. But they are still out there working and paying taxes. They are still punished.
Criminal charges are harder to prove. And it would probably make the world feel better to think of these folks languishing in prison but in reality they are not a danger to society like say, a pedophile or a serial rapist. And if they go to prison, your taxes would then pay for them and their minor dependents. And probably screw them up even worse!
I don't think it will do much besides make helicopter parents even more overbearing on their children, and subsequently make the children more disliking of authority.
Poor parenting can very well be a problem, but many times it is not. With the Columbine shooters for example, they both had fairly normal childhoods and their parents did a pretty 'normal' job at raising them. It's not the parents' faults that Eric was a malignant psychopath and that Dylan was an impressionable depressive.
On top of this, many of these shooters do a fairly good job of masking their intentions until its too late. But does that mean every parent should rip apart their child's room weekly looking for guns? It's infeasible.

Anyone know why?
Probably because many kids don't have parent"S" and it would demonstrate bias.
that would be a reasonable strategy if situations were evaluated individually. Laws are rarely written intelligently. they become all or nothing at all computer generated edit checks tolerating too many false positives. Wild ass kid hanging with gangs not close to parent presents a problem.
Guns in home need to be in a safe.
Schools need to teach gun safety as offered by the NRA. If kids were really a concern, parents would demand schools teach kids about guns as they do with drugs, health, driver's ed and fire safety.
Teach what a kid should do if his bud pulls out a gun when at home.
If a kid goes out and burns someone's house down, the parents are legally and financially responsible.
Why shouldn't it be criminal to allow a chid to access a gun and bring it to school?
Financially responsible, not criminally. The notion is to have the parents make the injured whole, not to punish the parents, as is the intent with crimes.
To allow something means it’s done with consent and there’s no consent without knowledge. I doubt the parents of young killers are allowing their kids to take guns to school or to kill. If a parent allowed a kid to break the law the parent probably already broke existing laws. Good people can have bad kids and to be jailed for that is simply unreasonable. And some kids are just bad seeds, what are you gonna do?
good idea! if parents own guns and kids can get them charge the parents with murder just like their kids.
