Why do Americans say that in the US you have the freedom to live any type of life you want to live? Do you really think this is true? In my opinion only the wealthy in the US really get to live the way they want, everyone else is just trying to follow some script.
I believe a person can be whatever he or she sets out to be, that is, if they have self-confidence, ambition, desire, determination, if they stay focused on their vision, and they have a true strong passion to the point that most of the time they only want to be around other people who share the same passion.

Any evidence that this is true? Doesn't everyone have limitations? Aren't some people well advised to make the best of what nature has given them, instead of thinking they could be Einstein (or Tom Brady) if only they tried a little harder?

Probably because they have read the constitution and bill of rights.
Opinion is worthless.

I have found their isn't a good substitute for hard, but smart work...
Yes there is. Good looks, charisma, dishonesty, and the willingness to step on others to get to the top will get you a lot farther nowadays than hard work.
In the U.S., one has the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
This is what the Constitution states, but I am not sure that these rights are really protected in this country.
According to Maslow's hierarchy of needs, one of our most basic, fundamental needs is for shelter. Yet here in the US, investors have driven the cost of housing so high that "shelter" is too expensive for many people. I know that some people can train themselves to be content with very little, but this is not natural human instinct. So how can we say that people have a right to pursue happiness if they can not even get their most basic needs satisfied?
After the basic needs, the next tier deals with safety and security. This need is not being met if you live in a crime-infested neighborhood because you can't afford to live in a safe one.

As Pontius Pilate told Ben-Hur, "The grown man knows the world he lives in." A grown man, not a child.
Children are told they can be whatever they want to be. It awakens them, in terms they can understand, of what is open to them in the world. As they grow up, reality imposes itself soon enough. But if they start out believing they can't, they won't.
Henry Ford said, "If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right."
There's a refrain from "Home, Home on the Range" that goes,
"Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the sky is not cloudy all day."
Kids don't need discouraging words. They shouldn't be told they can't.

Very simple.
It's made possible by Americans right to the "pursuit of happiness" in that there are no legal barriers that prevent you from achieving the highest level of lifestyle and freedom of career choices to make it possible.
Note that none of this means that happiness and success is guaranteed.
Because the active word is pursuit.
