Different target audience, different level design, different controls, different mechanics, etc
To me I always thought them as the racing games of non motorized vehicles, even then some actually involve racing on them(who can forget the SSX series?)
I think people just want to classify it whatever matches the main element. I think a similar situation is with combat sports games and especially wrestling games since wrestling still debated on being a sport yet.
This is why I think sports games shouldn't even be constructed as a genre, more as an umbrella term like action games, there are the most huge and general out of all gaming genres. Hell, at least simulation games have more straightforward sub genres.
How do games like Tony Hawk get the sports label on them more so than even arcade style racing games or even fighting games?
IMO, only the first 2 Tony Hawk games felt quite sport-based and energetic. Later games get more puzzle-packed and require even more thinking. I am not even arguing semantics, just saying.
Couldn't agreed more
They kind of have their niche gaming community too (which applies to my target audience statement)
