What brings my post to mind is that a famous blues singer is being "canceled", his nomination for a major award being rescinded for essentially no good reason, see Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s Blues Awards Nomination Rescinded Over ‘Dukes’ Confederate Imagery; Guitarist Says He Retired It (link). There were once meritorious causes such as real civil rights. Those included:
The right to rent or buy housing where they want;
The right to travel where they want;
The right to apply for a job and be considered on their merits rather than their skin color;
The right to vote;
The right to have their votes count;
The right to apply for and attend universities; and
Basically the right to be treated the same way whether they are of any race or religion.
There are all kinds of made-up "causes." Climate change, and the need for "equitable" rather than effective and actual rollout of the Covid vaccine come to mind. I believe that people should be fighting for real change, giving what Hubert Humphrey called a "hand up rather than a hand out." People should also, on their own, work to associate with groups and people whom they don't normally befriend or do business. And stop shaming those that disagree with them.

I don't believe anything about climate change is made up. There are legitimate questions about how far and how fast we can do to do something about it. The fact that the Earth is gradually warming up is virtually undisputable. Our own CIA believes climate change is occurring and has factored into many geo-political analyses it has made.

In hindsight I maybe should not have thrown "climate change" into the mix. However some, though not all, of the climate change advocates are seeking some redistribution from the First to the Third World. Indeed, that's how the Paris Climate Accords are written. The preamble is idealistic and talks a lot about the disruptions from climate change. The "action" part sets unrealistic targets for advanced countries to reduce emissions and sets a large fee to pay into something colloquially called a "Green Fund" that gets paid to developing countries, ostensibly to subsidize adjustment costs for climate change.
If that went any further than central air for the dictator's residence I'd be shocked.

I agree with you.
These are deceptions for the most part...its troubling how many citizens allow themselves to fall for it though

One reason may be that all of these "causes" feel good, but don't require any real sacrifice. Urging that a statue be demolished or a sports team renamed costs them nothing. The game will still be the same whether the name is the Washington Redskins or the parody-ready temporary name, the Washington Football Team. Or whatever name it gets. Those people can feel even better about themselves pointing out that Washington was a slave-holder and maybe the city needs a new name.
I think you've got it backward, people like to feel good and virtue signal, so they find out causes and advertise their involvement to get justification. Most causes didn't start as gimmicks to siphon peoples support. But they can quickly devolve into movements that do, ie Black Lives Matter.
Business leaders, celebrities, media, academics, ministers, politicians... societal influencers, latch on to causes, sometimes for genuine interest to help an issue and sometimes to help their own image, then people follow the influencers.
The problems are 2 fold:
1. People get so wrapped up in the cause they forget the underlying issues at heart; Kenny Wayne being a perfect example here, as he is clearly not some supremacist regressive bigot.
2. People use the causes to earn virtue points and really don't care about solving the cause; ie yacht clubs gathering at summits solving climate change.
And when anyone says "well the science clearly states", that's when you know they've swallowed the preaching hook line and sinker because the science rarely conclusively and comprehensively backs all of their controversial talking points. In the 21st century, religion is out of vogue and science is in vogue, but people just mask their religiously oriented sentiments under the veil of science or equality or rights, where it doesn't matter what the logical hangups or unintended consequences are, all that matters is if you are on the same belief train they are. They don't want results, they want a following.

That, and coming up with racial straw signals not only signals virtue but is a way to shut down discussion.

Because they never wanted to discuss. Most everyone, even the socially unaware, know that barreling into a conversation all cannons blazing is not going to bring honest dialogue from the other side.
OP, who is "they?" That blues singer still has a career.
I'm sure you are aware that millions of Americans have found Confederate symbols and imagery highly offensive for DECADES. The problem was that no one cared until recently. As a nation, we are righting past wrongs.
The ridiculousness is best overcome by illustrating it at every possible perceived slight or disparagement (real or imagined) by having every possible ethnic group to overload the system as the Alinsky acolytes are doing.
All Polish people should demand public art museum labels have an additional explanation label under all Jackson 'Pollock' works, and request a designated safe space within the museum where they can recuperate.
All Irish should demand the "Lucky Leprechuan" in Lucky Charms be removed and demand reparation for a percent of all Lucky Charms sales by General Mills since 1964.
All Hispanics should demand reparations from Prestige Brands and Proctor and Gamble for a percent of a certain cleaning product "______ n Span" sales revenue since its creation in 1933.
..... add more for fun!
If 'dogs' are racist and 'math' is racist, well it's time to pile on to the idiocy rather than try to be rational. They deserve all the idiocy they are promoting to feel 'virtuous'.
