I see third party and independants posing the greatest threat ever in 2010 and 2012, but both parties will team up to fight them with every thing they have. Hopefully both parties will continue declining and collapse or swing radically to the center to survive.
I'll be the first one to say that Reagan was probably the best President this country has had in the past 40 years or so. However, Reagan wasn't perfect! He did some things during his term that we're feeling the effects on to this day. His biggest mistake was signing the 1986 immigration bill into law, which granted amnesty to illegal aliens. Thinking back, Reagan probably didn't realize the impact it would have since the bill had other intentions as well ... however, this is one of the things that has led to the revolt against illegal immigration in the past few years.
But one of the things I liked about Reagan was, even though he was a social conservative in his personal beliefs, he didn't enforce his personal agenda on the American public. He appointed the first woman in history to serve on the Supreme Court, who was actually more Libertarian in a lot of her decisions. Reagan was strong against overbearing labor unions, and strong against international terrorism. His legacy helped bring economic prosperity and peace to the U.S. during his term.
If the GOP expects to have any chance in 2012 and/or 2016, they need to put forth a candidate similar to Reagan ... or even Barry Goldwater. In other words, they really need to focus on their past strengths such as FISCAL conservativism ... cutting taxes as well as spending, and reducing the national debt while still being militarily strong (but not overbearing). Most of all, the GOP really needs to dump their ridiculous religious agenda. There's nothing wrong with having strong religious beliefs, but they shouldn't be part of politics ... and they certainly shouldn't be enforced into laws.

As a die hard Republican, I totally agree with you. The problem is that so many key issues are morally related and people get real head strong about those issues. Much of the large evangelical caucus did not vote in this election because they simply can not (morally within their own heart) vote for a candidate that supports abortion. They didn't support McCain at all. It is always a problem to pacify this large group without getting a$$ deep in morality legislation.
Again, they certainly have as much right to their convictions as everyone else does, and I respect them greatly, but trying to figure out how to bridge the gap between GOP fundamentalist and GOP moderates will have to be addressed.
These convictions may seem odd to someone who doesn't share them, but when someone has a strong Christian relationship with their God, they aren't going to bend or compromise. I go through the same judgment call on every election.
It should not take till 2012, I think the 2010 election will show that people are center-right given that there wont be a new prez to vote on. the I hate bush thing is OVER. and the progressive thinking socialists wont need 4 years to p off the majority of the country.
Very well put, Mark. I think this clearly defines how most traditional Americans think. My only fear is that the new administration will want to create enough new voters through a massive influx of new citizens from Mexico who will be conditioned into thinking that our socialist party is all we need. The sense of a viable conservative party may be a thing of the past.

Mc was ok...until he pandered to the religious right. from that point on, he was no longer a maverick, just another R seeking the "blessing" of those at the edge.
And Ms P had certain positives. Unfortunately, her negatives outweighed the pluses.
the net was that the R's went after voters who were not interested in thinking what was best for the country, but in what was best for the ideology of the far right.

Conservatives haven't done anything to help working Americans. C's are mainly concerned w/ "social issues" such as abortion, gay marriage, prayer in schools, taxes. None of these issues does anything to make one's life better.
Oh, taxes! Do lower capital gains taxes help most working Americans? No. If the top tax bracket is reduced, does that help working Americans? Of course not.
Gay marriage only affects gay people. So, unless you enjoy denying something to someone else, then gay marriage should not be a concern.
No one "likes" abortion. The point is to allow women the right to decide what is best for them.
I could go on, and will. Liberal does not equal socialist does not equal communist. Does conservative equal fascist? I don't think so.
Now on to Ronnie R. The deficit exploded when he was in office. Conservative? The gov't became much more intrusive into our personal lives. Conservative? What happened to health care under Ronnie? It changed...by becoming more and more expensive. Remember, more competition does not necessarily mean lower prices. It just means more competition.
And, what is wrong w/ everyone in our country having health ins of a high quality where everything is covered, nothing excluded?
Conserve the best of the past, progress towards changes that will make all our lives better.

how can you top 7 million to 3million.. it was a bought race all the way around starting with the media. then you have obama who was president of annenberg corp who owns fact check, this race was all about money and power and mccain was to moral to go that route..he isn't a shouter or finger pointer, he was just mccain, the man i've been following since his pow days.. i've searched all his records in politics and he was impeccable.. Compare these to obamas "NIL" hand and what do you have..voted the most liberal senator of 2007 in junk spendings in record time to a tune of $932 million dollars to dna bears? Compared to mccains junk spendings of under $1million in over 21 years.. Now how well will obama do for the economy?
