Good to know. Perhaps the religion debate should be moved to another thread, so we can get back to discussing the initial issue of television advertising and children.

You are absolutely right.

I stopped posting on those sites because of the extreme hatred exhibited by several posters. I would not have gotten involved with that issue here if I had not been attacked.
It appeared that I was deemed fair game!

We've gone to the rationale that people use to judge the acceptability of Cialis ads in a family viewing room. What always happens in Great Debates is that somebody declares the the debate is over, because of his infallible interpretation of biblical scripture,, which cannot be disputed owing to the fact that the authority is imaginary in the first place. That cannot be countered with logic, for the same reason that you cannot convince a child that his imaginary friend is not real.

Ah, yes. I believe I've encountered this person (or his doppelgänger) before in a debate thread about whether or not it was more valuable to win an argument or to persuade someone to change his mind.

Here is what happens when the devout Christians see the Cialis commercial. They start to squirm in their chair, wracked by shame, because it brings to mind all the times they commited the venal sin of sneaking off to the bathroom to masturbate, and feel so guilty about it, they can't stand to be reminded of anything sexual. Their greatest fear is that someday their children will understand what these commercials are about and will wonder of mommy and daddy ever masturbated when they were children. Or yesterday. So they protest loudly and vigorously against this titanic threat to their weak and shriveled sense of personal virtue and even weaker sense of self-esteem. They are poised on the brink of being outsmarted an defeated by a 6-year-old, against whom they have no intellectual defense.

This is normal human psychology. Don't screech and wail in protest and denial, just accept what is going on in your psyche, and deal with it.

Instead they turn to religion. Once their church tried to burn Galileo at the stake for daring to jack with the dogma. Then, when Columbus proved that Galileo was right, the same church was right there in the front of the line with its hand out, demanding all the gold from the other side of the globe, which they had just lately denied the existence of. And this is the church that these squirming TV viewers trust to guide them in their moral choices.

Nope, I think it has too. I'm going to close it, clean it up and then I might reopen it.

Please remember, this is the Great Debates Forum. Please read the two stickies at the top of the forum. Off topic, rude, one liners, and personal attacks will be deleted and threads will be closed!

EDIT:

After reviewing this thread I have decided that it will remain closed. More than half of the posts contribute nothing to what COULD have been a very good debate.
