I am for reform and second chances for people who lie, cheat, steal, deal drugs, use drugs, etc, etc.
I've seen people who are......... drug dealers, gang bangers, habitual drunk drivers, home invasion thugs, car jackers, tax frauds, white collar criminals, bank robbers, etc, etc, REFORM themselves and go on to have productive lives. Many even became better then average citizens. I believe everyone should get a second chance, ASIDE FROM those who PREY upon children and innocence.
If you target children, no second chances
If you kill someone in cold blood, no second chances
If you brutally rape a woman, man or child, no second chances.
The difference in analyzing both is this.......in the first set of examples, these are bad deeds and stupid things people do, not who they are.......in the second set, IT IS WHO THEY ARE!
Get the difference? Predators do not learn from their mistakes, its who they are! they live, breathe and eat by preying on innocence. No reform, just lock them away.

The problem is people often legislate to prevent the worst of the worst from getting light sentences, since many people before decided the crime wasn't bad or fought so hard they got off light to just do it so many times that it was necessary to enforce very tough standards. So anyone who might be considered under the criminal statute will be pushed in the same group.
The unfortunate part is there is no way to legislate common sense, where one may have a crime that falls in a general category is not always the same level of crime. Since people who did things that were really no no's got off lightly, people decided to close it off for everyone.
Assault is another big one, where it can range from violating some one's personal space to threating people to slapping some one (I knew some one who was drunk and accidentally tripped and shoved some one, even after apologizing profusely). Big variation in terms, all require similar punishment buy defining regions (robbery, officer, aggravated, weapon).
Last week, two middle school students in Valparaiso, Ind., were caught sending nude pictures of themselves to each other on their cell phones. The students were caught when the 13-year-old girl's cell phone rang in class, and her teacher confiscated it, according to a police report. The girl cried that she would get in trouble because a 12-year-old boy sent her a "dirty picture."
The boy sent the girl a picture of his genitals and requested that she do the same, the report said. The girl then texted him a picture of her naked, police said.
The students have been charged with child exploitation and possession of child pornography, both felonies. They were referred to the county's juvenile probation department, which will determine whether authorities pursue or drop the charges, Gensel said. If convicted, the students could be required to register as sex offenders, he said.
yup, b/c these kids deserve to be on the same registry as the guy who kidnapped and raped a child or someone who raped a 1 year old baby
In order for sexual activity to be considered "consensual" both (or all) parties need to meet or exceed the age of consent....right?
All these posters claiming that a 15 year old girl should be entitled to engaging in sexual intercourse with 40 year old men (the majority of these posters are probably males), most likely do not or have not had a 15 year old daughter.
'Grooming', anyone? Talking about how much better a 40 year old man would treat a teen girl he is sexually exploiting brings the taste of vomit into my mouth.
In the end they are convicted sex offenders and need to loo to themsleves for the problem. I fully expect for sex offender laws to get much tougher personally.
Without a doubt, there are some "sex crimes" that are far worse than others. It's obvious that a 50-year old man violating a 5-year old boy or girl is far worse than an 18-year old having consensual sex with a 17-year old.
Even so, the problem is always going to come down to one question: Where do you draw the line? I suppose there need to be many lines, regarding sex crimes. But they'll still have to be drawn, and there will always be people who are receiving an unjustly harsh penalty for their "crime" while other people receive an unjustly small punishment for theirs.
"Close in age" exemptions are a great thing. An 18 year old having sex with a 17 year old is, in my eyes, two teenagers having sex. They're close in age. For example, Tennessee has a four year exception, so these morally bankrupt prosecutions don't happen. 30 and 17 having sex is one thing, and it's wrong. 30 and 14, even worse. But two teens? As ill-advised as it sometimes turns out, it should be legal - teenagers will be teenagers.

That's what happens when lemmings in a moral panic make laws. I don't care if those kids were having sex, they're two kids. Close in age. Not some adult pervert. Now if a 50 or 25 or even 16 year old was involved, there should be trouble - for the adult. How about we make a law that CHILDREN cannot be prosecuted for possession of child pornography (with the exception of 16 and 17 year olds in possession of preteen porn). Whoever filed the charges was either obligated to or is insane.
Heck, I think it's morally wrong to prosecute anyone under about 14.
