Most of the major retailers decided this year to "get a leg up" on their insidious Christimas advertising by starting Christmas ads at Halloween. The thinking is that we'll all just "sheeple" along, deciding that "Oh yes, I need to go down to Wall-Cost-Less-Co and buy buy buy!"
The range of totally useless battery-powered RC toys, brainless Barbie perfumes and Chia Pets (I saw the Obama Chia pet recently...)
...strikes at the inanity of this whole commercialistic world. Especially in this economy, which we've largely gotten ourselves into by "needing to buy" anything and everything. Shouldn't we be turning our collective intellectual backs on the whole idea of crass Christmas commercialism?
Of course, where would the economy go then? Hundreds of thousands of retail workers out of a job, major retailers going out of business, and their suppliers with unsold crappy little toys and trinkets stacked up in their wharehouses.
How do we get out of this mess?
Will it take a true global recession, millions in the streets and population starvation down to a manageable global level?
Or, do we just go buy the Obama Chia Pet with a dejected sigh?

Here's an idea. Gather up all the wish lists from everyone you need to shop for. Then go and enjoy the unalloyed delights of shopping, not to buy them, but to note the price. Then add it up and send a check to a worthwhile charitable organization that does humanitarian work. Send everyone on your gift list a card telling them what you did with their gift money, since you have decided, for a change, to have a meaningful Christmas. Ask them to do the same, instead of giving you a gift.
Shops want to make people buy, they provide the service and hold the inventory. It's annoying as heck that I remember seeing the Christmas ads starts when I was wearing shorts, but it's what they do. You see places like Macy's and there's 30 holiday sales a year, or more.
People like to shop, let them get whipped up and out to the malls to go berserk looking for parking, dealing with crowds, and long lines...then cry their frustration to the world. I don't go nuts on it, but we have gotten everything we wanted to give in the last 9 months of the year. Now we can just look at the lights and laugh at the musak, while anything interesting on sale we can browse if the crowds are small. That holiday only crap is a laugh riot to look at, but I think I would only get it for some one I really didn't like.
I would bet this Christmas will spell the doom of many businesses. I am running on the tight side and I REFUSE to go into debt for the jolly fat men on Wall Street. I also know I am not alone...

And if you can hold on to your shorts, patiently, you can get it all the day after New Years for about 40% off the already 60% off. Hey wait; that adds up to 100%!

Actually, I'm really trying to downsize my inventory of "stuff" and I get a bit antsy when I see thoughtless over-consumerism runnin' rampant in the streets.

They started with the bell ringers and their buckets in front of the stores by me already. This is the earliest I can remember. It has NOT put me in the Christmas Spirit,,,BAH,HUMBUG!>
